Frugal Living Friday: The Best Frozen Cookie Dough

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I was talking with a friend about this last week and she had never thought of doing it, so I decided it would be a good FLF topic. Do you buy frozen cookie dough at the store? Well, no more! Did you know you can mix up a batch of your favorite cookie cookies at home and freeze the dough? Then you can have REAL homemade cookies at your convenience! Homemade not only tastes better, but it is better for you. There are so many preservatives, lots of sodium, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils in store bought items such as cookie dough.

Mix up a batch of your favorite cookies. I have a favorite recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. I doubled the batch, baked a couple dozen for our FHE treats, then decided to freeze the rest.I make cookie balls, place them on a large cookie sheet and then stick in the freezer. I usually leave them there for several hours so they can get hard.
After the cookie balls are frozen, put them into a Ziploc bag. I don't use my Food Saver on these because I know we will want to get into them soon! :) Now I have 60 cookie balls all ready to bake when I need or want some fresh cookies! You can let them completely thaw before baking, but I don't always do that because I am impatient. Sometimes they are only partly thawed when I bake. Depending on your cookie recipe and the ingredients, it might vary on the consistency of your baked cookie. Experiment with your favorite cookie recipes!

Great idea, Marne! Sometimes, if I have extra time on the day I make the cookies in the first place, I'll bake all the dough, then freeze the cookies themselves. Then they're perfect for going in a lunchbox...by the time my daughter opens her lunch at school, the cookie is thawed and waiting for her. :D

I have done this before at is is dangerous! Frequently I would find myself sneaking to the freezer and eating the frozen cookie dough. I don't think I can have it around. I prefer baking all the cookies and having a bag of frozen baked cookies - then they are ready for a quick treat at home or for lunches.

I do this (way too often) and with my sugar cookies, too. I make the dough, then roll it into a log, then wrap it up and freeze it. Then I cut off the dough into rounds and sprinkle sugar and cook. This is great if I need something to give someone for a treat--and it looks good.

It's funny how different we all are...if I bake the cookies and then freeze them, I will eat them all! I won't be able to stay out of them. I don't have a problem staying out of the cookie dough, though. It really doesn't tempt me.

I love this idea...however, I can't get a cookie sheet into my freezer. I have a side by side, and there is a wall next to the freezer, so with the handle to door won't open all the way. (It's fun let me tell you, but even funnier to watch). Any other ideas on how to freeze the dough? If I put it in the fridge first then would it stay hard enough in the bag? Maybe I should just bake them all!

You could just freeze cookie dough logs. I do that too. Then that would solve your problem. I personally just like them already in balls but either way works great.

I like to make these as gifts too. I also have to get them out of my freezer because I will often times find myself sneaking one, uh, maybe two rolls of dough, and, well, before you know it they are all gone ;)

Great idea!!! I'm going to do this next time I make cookies. :) Would you share your recipe also?! Jen, I bet you could use a cake pan too, what ever size of pan that would fit in your freezer.
