Menu Plan Monday: August 31

I have seen some different ways of posting menus. Not just the dinners but he other meals as well. I think I will try that this week. I am trying to eat better. I will also be posting our weekly Family Home Evening Treat.

Also, if I am trying a new recipe I will have a red asterisk (*) by it. Some new recipes I find online, those I will give a link for. Others I won't put online unless I like them first. Join Menu Plan Monday at OrgJunkie today!

No more Sunday ads for Michael's

I got an email this morning from Michael's Arts and Crafts. Starting this weekend, August 30th, they are discontinuing their Sunday newspaper ads with their coupons.

I posted several months ago about how to get online Michael's coupons. So never fear....we can still get those 40% off coupons!

GO HERE to find out how to get Michael's coupons directly into your email inbox! Plus, if you are a new subscriber you should get a 50% off coupon for your first one!

Plus, remember that Joann's Fabrics DOES take Michael's coupons. They just require that they carry the same item you are purchasing. I like using my Michael's coupons at Joann's if I can. Mainly because they let me use both my Joann's coupon and Michael's coupon in the same visit! Michael's only lets you use one per visit.

Frugal Living Friday: Common Sense Repairs

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become guest blogger for a day.

Have you ever found yourself calling a repairman for a home appliance problem? Then when they get there & inspect the issue, you find out its a simple fix? Then you are stuck paying a large service call fee when you could have fixed the problem yourself.

Here is an example. For a week or so I have noticed that our refrigerator wasn't getting as cold as it should. We turned up the temperature but it was not getting colder. My husband said he would look at it. The next morning as I got the milk out it was very cold! And it was a simple, quick fix.

The fridge and freezer work together to keep the temperature regulated properly. See this vent? It is in the top left of the fridge, and it goes to the freezer on the other side.

The problem was this: That bag of bacon bit was standing up blocking the flow vent. That's it! Once my husband folded down the bag the fridge started to become colder within the hour. If we had called a service man we would have paid at least $75 for him to just tell us that.

If you have something wrong with an appliance, toilet, or other item in your home, take some time to check into what might be wrong before you pick up the phone to call a repairman. My husband is handy, but if you are not maybe you know someone who is that could give you some tips. It just might save you lots of cash.

Here are some online resources to learning more about home repairs:

Did you get doublers for Albertson's in yesterday's paper?

While at Albertson's this afternoon I saw that the Lysol wipes, 35 count, are on sale 2/$4. Pair the sale price with the $1/1 coupon from the 7/12 SS insert & the doublers and they are free! Just pay sales tax. I bought three containers this afternoon and paid .18 cents total!

You could also get the Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, also on sale 2/$4. Use the .50/1 coupon from the same insert and get the cleaner for only $1 after doubles.

This is another reason I LOVE LOVE double coupons at Albertson's. GREAT deals!

Make It Monday: Triple C

Remember the Post cereal sale? I stocked up on a lot of Shredded Wheat biscuits because I love to make this cereal. This is a recipe I grew up with. My grandma made it all the time, and so my mom followed suit. Grandma called it "Chewy Cold Cereal" but I grew up calling it "Triple C." This is seriously one of my favorite cereals ever! I hope you like it too.

Triple C
Take 12 Shredded Wheat biscuits and put them in a large bowl.

Use your hands (clean, of course) to break them up. I don't like large chunks so I smash them up really well, like this.

After this is done, add the following ingredients:
1 c. raw, hulled sunflower seeds (not salted)
2 c. oats, quick or regular
1/2 c. dry milk
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. wheat germ
1/2 c. milled flax seed

Use a large spoon to mix together and smash up the brown sugar good all throughout. The end result looks like this:

I want to make more just posting about this! I love topping my bowl with fresh berries, especially blueberries and strawberries. Bananas are good with it too. I also love the sunflower seeds in it so I always add more than 1 cup.

ENJOY!

Frugal Living Friday: Burp Cloths

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become guest blogger for a day.

I like simplicity. Especially when it comes to something practical, and something I need.

Almost 4 years ago, my baby then was a HUGE spitter-upper. I am talking H-U-G-E. The poor thing was spitting up hours after eating. I was doing so much laundry I thought I would wear out the washer. I quickly found that I needed about 3 times the burp cloths that I had. But I didn't want to spend any extra money.

One weekend soon after I was at the Other Mother's Quarter Sale and found two soft, thin, and large receiving blankets that were in great shape. An idea entered my head....I could cut them up and sew them into burp cloths!

I was so excited at my little revelation. So I purchased four of those blankets for .25 each. I cut each blanket into the size of burp cloth I wanted.

Then I doubled up the cloth to make it thicker to hold all that gross spit up! Here are a few examples of ones that I sewed together. Mind you, they are not fancy AT ALL...like I said, I like simplicity. I was a tired mom of 3 crazy kids and I didn't care how fancy they were.

So out of those four blankets that I bought for $1, I was able to get 16 burp cloths! Now you tell me where I could have found that many burp cloths for $1. I was very happy. It helped with the laundry load A LOT.

Now I told you I was simple.....but I thought maybe I should put a decorative stitch on there instead of a straight stitch. I don't know if you can see it very well, but there it is.

You could do this same idea with fabric scraps or anything you are getting rid of. You can make it as fancy and cutesy as you want. It's one more way to re-purpose I suppose.

Thrifty Tip Thursday

The end of summer is here. That means sales/clearances will be starting on perennials, trees, bulbs, and other garden goodies! Fall is the best time to plant trees and perennials...did you know that? I have already seen local sales starting at 50% off. Watch the stores in your area. Last year I got a burning bush and day lilies at 75% off.

Another way to save money on plants when you are looking for perennials is to get starts from someone you know. Perennials are the plants that grow back every year. In the fall and early spring you can get a start off the full size plant and re-plant it somewhere else. FREE plants! If we all shared what plants and flowers we had this way we wouldn't need to buy nearly so many.

Ask a neighbor or friend about getting a start from their perennials.

Organizing Results

**Please know that I have spent the last 6 years couponing to keep up my supply. I use up and re-stock my supply as needed. I do not hoard. I know many others have much more than this. I only keep on hand what will do our family for 8 months to one year. Once I have enough I don't have to buy for awhile. That's the beauty of stocking up!**

Remember the post I made last week? I really needed to organize underneath my kids bathroom sink, which was where I stashed a lot of my hygiene items I get for free or nearly free.

I don't have extra closet space to store these, so I got an extra tote I had to put them in. I lined the bottom with all my shampoos, conditioners, and a few hair products. I kept out one extra for me, my husband and the kids for when we run out.

I still had quite a bit of space to use up, but I didn't want the tote to become a mess like under the sink was by just throwing stuff in there. So I cut up an empty cardboard box and put half of it on top of the shampoo bottles.

Nice and neat!

Now it was the perfect place to store toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss. Anything oral hygiene. Gotta keep it all together.

Yay! I love being organized. I get just fuzzy thinking about it. I labeled my tote and will store it in my closet for easy access. I also found a smaller plastic tote I wasn't using to keep all my bandaids and ointments in. I wanted those out from under the cupboard anyway because my kids thought they had free reign on the bandaids and were using them up nonstop.

So, want to know what under the sink looks like now? In case you forgot, here is the before shot:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Much, MUCH better! Now we have room for necessary items under the sink plus growing room. Did I mention that I LOVE being organized?

Do you have an organizing project right now?

Menu Plan Monday: August 17

Why is it so hard for me to plan menus in the summertime? Who knows. The lack of a schedule I suppose. In any case, we started school here last week (my kids are in year-round) so hurray for schedules again! I am in the works of planning my menus for 60 days. Maybe I am crazy. I would like to think it will save me in the end. We'll see! I will keep you posted.

Also, all of my menus planned for this week are from my food storage! The only things I need to buy are perishables. Everything else I have stocked. It's a great feeling! I also still have some meals in the freezer, some half eaten some not, so I will incorporate that into my week. Join Menu Plan Monday over at OrgJunkie today!

MONDAY: Grilled red potatoes (from our garden) & black bean and corn dip

TUESDAY: BBQ Cheddar Chicken Rolls ups (use up all that free BBQ sauce!)

WEDNESDAY: Taco Salad

Kraft promo update

Thanks to Utah Deal Diva for this update on the Albertsons/Kraft promo.

I spoke with my contact at Albertson's and she gave me more information regarding the Kraft Promo:Here is the correct address you need to mail the rebate form & receipt to:

Kraft Foods-SuperValu Back-to-School MIR Offer #511-5
P.O. Box 753854
El Paso, TX 88575-3854

If you already mailed in your rebate, the Rebate center in Ohio has been instructed to send them back to the Return address, which is Albertson's corporate in Idaho. They will then forward them along to the Texas address. Please feel free to call 1-877-932-7948 with any concerns.

There are over 1,900 UPC codes that supposedly trigger the $5 catalina & rebate form, however with as many people as we've seen NOT have the forms print, I'm just not sure they're all working! If your $5 coupon or rebate offer does not print, instead of calling Catalina marketing, please call Albertson's at 1-877-932-7948. They want to be kept informed of any issues shoppers are having. They will help you get the $5 coupon and proper rebate form.

She explained to me how this was (hopefully) going to work, and quite honestly, it's a mess. All rebate requests WILL be honored, even if you purchased some of the items not listed on the Kraft Shopping list here. However, it's not clear yet how that will all work and how long it will take. I highly recommend keeping copies of everything you submit and if 6-8 weeks goes by and you still haven't seen anything, call 1-877-932-7948 to at least make Albertson's aware that you haven't received your rebate.

Keeping all this in mind here are my suggestions:
  1. Shop off the Kraft list. I know, there are less products, but I feel that with all the issues this promo is already having, I want to make my rebate as simple as possible to process.
  2. Make copies of everything before mailing it in. (This really should be done anytime you submit a rebate!)
  3. In those records, make note of the day you mailed it in. Also, mark on a calendar what date you should receive your rebate by.
  4. Keep this Albertson's number 1-877-932-7948 in your records so you can easily access it should you receive a rejection letter for your rebate.

Again, these are just my suggestions. Everyone I've spoken with regarding this promo has been very helpful. Yet the bottom line is, there was some serious miscommunication that occurred at some point and it's obvious this promo is problematic! I am choosing the safe route- I'll post some "safe" scenarios shortly!

Thrifty Tip Thursday

You know all these little toys you have around the house....from Happy Meals, birthday bags, trinkets from wherever....I find them annoying sometimes. You never have a place for them and they serve no purpose.

Anyway...a few years ago a good friend shared with me a great use for these toys....the bathtub!

We have a large supply of bathtub toys. I even rotate them since we have so many little toy things.

Never buy expensive bathtub toys again, plus clear out some clutter!

Important info regarding the Kraft $20 rebate

Thanks to Utah Deal Diva for this info.

I've received several emails regarding Albertson's $5 catalina coupons and the mail-in-rebate not printing so I did some research. I've been on the phone all day and while I don't yet have all the answers, I do have some info that might be helpful to anyone wanting to go shopping.

I'm working with several individuals right now at Albertson's and Kraft in trying to figure this out. They are all concerned and are trying to get to the bottom of this! If you've had issues, feel free to leave a comment on this post- they'll see it!

Three pieces of critical information:

Albertson's advertised several items as being part of the
Kraft promo that are not on the "official" Kraft rebate list.

Depending on how your store's receipt shows coupons,
the $25 total could be BEFORE or AFTER coupons!

There are 2 versions of the rebate address floating around
and we still don't know which one is correct.

I spoke with several individuals at Kraft and they confirmed that they WILL NOT honor a $20 rebate request if any of the items purchased are non-participating items.

The list below reflects the participating items and sizes. You can also print a copy here. I suggest taking a copy with you and very carefully make sure you get the correct items listed.

Here is a list of items that are on the Albertson's ad, but are unknown whether or not you'll receive the $20 mail-in rebate if you purchase them:

  • Nabisco Go Packs, $1
  • Kraft Chips Ahoy cookies, 16 oz variety
  • Kraft Grated Parmesan cheese, any variety
  • Velveeta 1lb or 2 lb blocks
  • Kraft Jell-O or Pudding, boxed variety (only 6-packs included)
  • Nabisco Honey Maid Bees, Smores or Morning Sticks variety crackers
  • Kraft Velveeta Shells & Cheese Dinner or Deluxe Macaroni & cheese, (anything over 7.25 oz)
  • Planters Mixed Nuts (only varieties 9.25 oz and over are included)
  • A-1 Steak Sauce, any varieties
  • General Food Intl Coffee Drink Mix

$25 Total, Before or After Coupons: If your store displays all the coupons redeemed at the bottom of the receipt, then you will be able to submit your rebate for $25 BEFORE coupons. However, if your store displays the coupon right after the line-item amount, then you will have to add up to $25 AFTER coupons.

I think most of us at least here in Utah should still be able to do the $25 before coupons. The only store around here that shows the coupon after the line item is Target.

Rebate address: There are 2 different addresses right now- one for Texas, the other for Ohio.

Kraft promo at Albertson's

Another good sale at Albies this week! The Kraft promo and Honey Bunches of Oats promos. I paid $16.66 out of pocket today, plus I got a $5 catalina back and will get back $20 from the Kraft rebate!

GO HERE for the printable shopping list, printable coupons and info on the sale.

GO HERE for the online ad. GO HERE for info on the Kraft Rebate.

Here is how I did it.

For this Post cereal, buy 4 and get $4 off instantly. It makes the cereal $1.50 a box. Add in the coupons from SS 7/26 insert and it makes the cereal $1 a box. I also got the HBO Pecan Clusters and used my $2/1 printable and paid .50 for it. PLUS, starting Friday you can get more for your money when you buy Post Selects! Here is a catalina offer for that. Note it is only for the Post Selects and NOT for the Honey Bunches of Oats.

Post Selects cereal
purchase between 8/14 - 9/6 (Starts FRIDAY!)
Buy (2) & Get $1 OYNSO
Buy (3) & Get $2
Buy (4) or More & Get $3

Then there is the Kraft promo. Purchase $25 of participating items and get a $5 catalina back, plus a $20 rebate form. I bought:

8 Planters Trail Mixes (my store had $1/2 peelies on the display)
2 Digornio pizzas
4 Jellos
2 Ritz Bitz (for my son's Kindergarten class snack)

Total came to $25 plus tax. I had $6.50 in manufacture coupons, which brought my total to $20. I got the $5 catalina back, plus the $20 rebate form to send in! Awesome!

I also purchased additional items as you can see in the photo. I bought everything in one transaction and I used $15 in catalinas from last week's sale to help my out of pocket today.

Make it Monday: Homemade Granola

I grew up on homemade granola. Oh YUM. If you have only had store bought granola you don't know what you are missing!

I took my mom's recipe & my mother-in-law's recipe, combined them and tweaked it a bit to my changing taste. Here is how our family loves granola.

CRUNCHY GRANOLA

5 c. oats (I usually use quick oats)
1/2 c. wheat germ
1/2 c. milled flax seed
1/2 c. coconut
1 c. sunflower seeds
1/2 c. sesame seeds
1 1/2 c. nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc. whatever you want!)
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 c. water
3/4 c. oil
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. honey
1/4 c. molasses
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp mapleine

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, combine oats, wheat germ, flax seed, coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, cinnamon, nuts, Blend well. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine water, brown sugar, oil, honey molasses, salt, vanilla, and mapleine. Heat and stir until sugar and honey are dissolved. Do not boil. Pour syrup mixture over dry mixture, and mix up well. Cover large cookie sheet with the granola mixture. Cook for 30-35 minutes for soft granola, longer for crunchy granola. Cool completely before putting into an air-tight container. Sometimes I end up cooking it for about 45 minutes if I am in the mood for really crunchy.

I love to eat granola for breakfast or snacks! I always top it with fresh fruit, or canned peaches in the winter.

Shopping Smart

I was back at Albertson's just now getting some Ragu (YAY..finally! I ended up paying around .30 cents or so per jar) and other sale items when I was confronted by a lady. She asked me about the sale and I told her how it worked. (See my post below for sale details).

She then told me how her daughter is in management and says "these coupon ladies come in and go crazy and we lose a lot of money. But the coupon companies keep making coupons so what do we do?"

Okay...Lesson #1: Albertson's (and any store) is reimbursed 100% for each manufacturer coupon plus .08 cents. They don't lose money. If you want to know what happens to your coupons after you use them & how stores get reimbursed, check out this informative article.

Lesson #2: This is smart shopping. Not silly stuff. Why wouldn't you want to get Ragu for .30 (or less) per bottle, Skippy for .63 cents and All detergent for .75 cents? Me...personally YES I do! I don't want to pay full retail price! Why would you?

Lesson #3: Albertson's LOVES coupon ladies! They love our business. As long as we all play by the rules they love us. And...they sell MORE because we are buying more. Remember....they get reimbursed for ALL those coupons we are using! I was even told by a stock person this morning he wished they knew ahead of time the coupons that matched up with this sale so they could have been more prepared. They WANT to help us!

Oh, and in case you are wondering I spent $10 out-of-pocket on my trip just now and got back $16 in catalinas. WHOO HOO!
