Frugal Living Friday: Summer Fun and Organization

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Today's Frugal Living Friday is a guest post from Holly over at 2 Kids and Tired. Holly is a devoted and creative mother to her two boys in addition to being a talented writer and businesswoman. Today Holly shares some good summer organization tips and fun frugal ideas. Visit Holly at 2 Kids and Tired for bits of inspirational wisdom and more fun ideas.

It's summer time. Kids are home all day. Life is a bit more unstructured. You might sleep in, you might stay up later. What are you doing this summer to make your life easier and your summer more enjoyable? How are you staying sane? Any fun plans?

Last year I learned about the Snack Box. I love the Snack Box. I fill it each morning and it contains all the snacks for the day. When they're gone, they're gone. The pantry is locked and no longer gets raided all day long. My boys are also eating more fruits, vegetables and cheese, because those things aren't in the Snack Box, and there's not as much limit.

This year I learned about the "no friends until after lunch time" rule. My friend does this with her kids and I love the idea. The morning is then spent a bit more quietly: my kids each have a couple of jobs to do, we do some reading, J is going to summer school, whatever. There is some flexibility, but the main thing is that I don't have a myriad of children running through my house ALL DAY long. In the afternoons, they play with friends, we've been going to the pool, and on Thursdays we're doing the library thing again. I renewed our zoo pass and am considering an annual pass for one or two other attractions.

We've also dug for fossils in the front yard.

Made a T-rex out of a box and brads.

Made yummy ice cream. And conducted a science experiment to make crystals.
What have you done? What new summer secrets can you share?

Thrifty Tip Thursday

One thing I love about the internet is all the information that's available. There are so many creative and knowledgeable people out there sharing great tidbits and ideas.

Today I wanted to share a thrifty tip I found on Vanilla Joy's website. Her idea of using empty soap dish containers for toys and trinkets is a great idea! I have done this with other containers but not soap dish containers. Perfect for kids.

It reminds me of Real Simple magazine, and their column New Uses for Old Things. I love reading these ideas.

What do you repurpose?

Rebates

Many of you have inquired about my list on the right sidebar of my blog about the rebates I have received over the years:

2003: $94.70
2004: $475.50
2005: $443.42
2006: $651.63
2007: $564.55
2008: $281.89

As you can see, I am pretty anal about keeping track of where my money goes and comes. Just ask my husband. I figure it all out to the penny, and I always know where my money is going. I believe that is KEY to keeping a budget and living frugally. You can't save if you don't know what you are spending. But that is another post....

I used to do a TON of rebates, mostly through Walgreens and Rite Aid. Four and five years ago the rebates were good and plentiful! But now Walgreens has cancelled their rebate program and that took away much of my earnings. So when I do rebates now, they are mostly through Rite Aid and specific manufacturer offers. So far this year I have earned back $102.62 in rebates and I have several out I am waiting on. Not as much as in years past I know. I have not been as aggressive this year in earning rebates. Family issues, having a baby and other things have been taking up more of my time. BUT it hasn't been a big deal because I have my stockpile built up. So missing a few months doesn't hurt any.

I have always gotten every rebate back because I follow the guidelines. Learn more about rebates HERE.

Do you like to do rebates? How much have you gotten back this year?

Blockbuster Express vs. Redbox

This is new to me but apparently has been around for a few months. Did you know that Blockbuster has kiosks for $1 dvd rentals? Blockbuster Express! Redbox finally has some competition!

Of course it has limited availability right now. They are currently at Circle K locations in various cities across the country. CLICK HERE to find a location near you. There are none in my area, so I cannot try them out. Frugal Living Friday: Setting Priorities

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Face it...there are LOTS of deals out there to be had. As couponers and deal finders, we all love the rush we get when we get freebies and deals. Who doesn't like it? Saving some cash feels so good!

However, if you are not careful, you can find yourself overspending and wasting money...even as a couponer and deal finder. You need to set limits for yourself. Use a budget.

After doing this for several years myself, I have found the following steps to be helpful for me and my family:

1. Set a budget. Decide what you can spend every month on groceries, food storage, household goods, etc. and stick to it. I allow a little bit of leeway room if there is a great stock up sale, but you have to be careful. If there is a week left in the month and you have already spent your allotted amount, use what is in your pantry or food storage and be creative! We only have so much money and I refuse to use my credit card when I know I can overspend. So I try to purchase enough at the stock up sales to get us through to the next sale.

2. Don't overspend on credit. I never use my credit cards on a regular basis. We tried it once....putting all our expenses on our credit card to earn more points. It didn't work for us. I ended up overspending and I had a more difficult time tracking my money. If using your credit card works for you, then just make sure you pay it off in full every month.

3. Keep track of where your money is going. Doing this is the only way you will know if you are really saving money on all those deals. Keep track of incoming and outgoing expenditures. I use Quicken, but there are many other kinds of financial software available for you to use. I review my spending and saving at least twice a month so I know where I am at. I am big on savings too. Every month I set aside an allotted amount for dental work, vision care, (we don't have dental or vision insurance) and auto insurance. That way when I have to purchase contacts, go to the dentist and pay my car insurance I already have that money set aside. If you would like to try out Quicken, you can. Use the Quicken Online Edition – Try it out for free!

4. Don't compare yourself to others. Every family has different expenses and income, so don't feel bad if you only got 10 boxes of cereal at the last sale and your friend got 30. Just do what you can and what your family needs. Couponing for you needs to fit your mold, so just concentrate on what you need.

5. Don't buy things you won't use. If you know you most likely will not use a certain item or kinds of food, don't buy it. Just because something is free doesn't mean you have to buy it. Sometimes I do buy things I know I won't use because I give them away to family, the food bank, or humanitarian drives. But on a whole I try to stick to that rule. I would say about 90% of what I buy we use. The other 10% I donate. I want my money to go for what I can use the most. Plus, I need to save my limited space for what I really need.

SWEET deal on tp and paper towels at Albertson's

There is a SWEET deal at Albertson's this week on tp and paper towels. I threw in the Wet Ones to get my total up to the promo amount, and we use them anyway.

I paid a total of $3 for everything here.

There is actually a better deal when you buy Playtex cleaning gloves instead of the Wet Ones. If you did the Playtex gloves instead you would actually get everything for FREE! Here is how it works:

Purchase 2 Sparkle Paper Towels Single Roll for $1 each
Purchase 2 Angel Soft Bath Tissue 4 pack for $2.50 each
Purchase 3 Playtex Disposable Gloves 10 pack $1.00

Save $3 instantly on your purchase (see printable shopping list link below for details)

Use (2) $2/1 Angel Soft & Sparkle printable coupons HERE
Use (3) Playtex Disposable Gloves, any $1/1 (10-30-09) SS-5/3

Final price is FREE!!!

I just substituted the Wet Ones instead, and used these printable coupons .We will use them, plus my store was already out of Playtex gloves.

Check the shopping list from PYP to see other cheap options for substitutions. Basically all you need to do is get your total up to $10 before coupons and tax to get the $3 off instantly when you purchase the promo items.

Go get a SWEET deal!

SWEET clearance deal

I went to Albertson's to get the deal in the above post, when I saw on the clearance rack they had this Jet Dry Turbo Dry rinse agent on clearance for $1 each.

I used this coupon (Finish Jet-Dry rinse Agent or Turbo Dry, any .40/1 (8-2-09) SS-6/7) to get each one for only .60 cents each! Too bad there are no doublers right now, but .60 cents each is still a SWEET deal!

It pays to check the clearance racks! Another reason to always carry your coupons with you. You never know when you might run across an unexpected deal.

Thrifty Tip Thursday

Being the middle of summer, we are loving our ice shaver I purchased at a garage sale for only $1. We use it quite a bit to make snow cones. YUM!

There are some yummy flavors of snow cone syrup at the store. Root beer, grape, cotton candy, lemon lime...you name it. We bought 4 containers of syrup from Walmart for $1.50 each a few weeks ago. Not super cheap but still better than taking my kids to the Snow Shack to pay for snow cones.

However, I ran across THIS POST from Skip to My Lou on how to make your own snow cone syrup. Genius! I love making things homemade but I am not one to experiment with recipes. Now that I know how to do it, we will be making our own for sure. See if this coupon can sweeten the deal:

Save $2 off any sugar when you buy (10) Kool-Aid Unsweetened Packets (7-31-09) SS-6/21

Target is now price matching!

Target is now price matching! I am so happy about this as I LOVE shopping there as opposed to Walmart. CLICK HERE for the official press release. But here is the entire article.

At Target, we are dedicated to offering exceptional prices on items throughout our stores.

As of July 12, Target stores nationwide will match advertised prices from competitors on identical items in local markets, assuring guests that our products are priced right. We've been testing Our Low Price Promise in Target stores in the Denver and Orlando markets since March 2009 and in select Minneapolis stores since May 2009.

Our Low Price Promise showcases our commitment to offering low prices and value to our guests. We’re giving our guests peace of mind that they can get a great deal at Target. We are confident we have low prices every day. However, if our guests happen to find a lower price on an identical single item – defined as the same brand and model number that is listed on a local competitor’s printed advertisement, during the effective date of the ad – we will match that price.

We are communicating Our Low Price Promise to guests through our weekly circular – in Sunday newspapers and online. Later this summer, we will add in-store signage.

It's still too early to gauge the impact of program but so far, guests have requested very few price adjustments.

How Our Low Price Promise Works
Within seven days of purchase, guests can bring the actual printed competitor ad and a Target receipt of purchase of the same item to our in-store Guest Service area to receive a price adjustment. Photos/copies of advertisements or receipts will not be accepted.

In an effort to ensure that our checkout lanes are efficient and quick for our guests, we’ll handle price matches at our Guest Service desk. If a guest wants to do a price match in the checkout lane, our team members will ring up an item at the current price and then direct the guest to the Guest Service desk to do the price adjustment.

Price matching will apply to current, local print ads for in-store products only. Our price-match policy is not applicable to Target.com or other online ads. The following is a full list of exclusions:

Target.com or online retail promotion
Competitor’s Free Product
GiftCards
Limited quantity items
Open box or damaged
Clearance or closeout
Mail-in offers
Services (warranties, assembly, etc.)
Bundle offers
Special order
Sales-tax promotions
Liquidation/going out of business
Special financing
Coupons
Used or previously owned
Display merchandise
Pricing or typographical errors
Club or loyalty

Value
We have significantly increased our emphasis on communicating value through our marketing, in-store signing and merchandise presentation. Our Low Price Promise demonstrates our commitment to offering great value to our guests.

Target remains true to our brand promise of “Expect More. Pay Less.” We’ll continue to focus our efforts on the “Pay Less” side of our brand promise, while continuing to offer our guests what has helped us differentiate ourselves from our competitors: high quality, great design, affordability, and an inviting shopping environment.

At Target, we have a long-standing commitment to being price competitive with other retailers. We also remain firmly committed to delivering the newness, innovative design and exceptional quality Target is known for.

What do I buy?

I always get asked what I buy on a regular basis. I don't have the time to take photos of every awesome shopping trip I do, but I do have awesome shopping trips all the time!

Last night I went to Albertson's and used 6 doubler coupons. I got milk for .49 cents a gallon, Cottonelle toilet paper for .18 cents a roll, and a few other goodies. Albertson's is the main place I shop on a regular basis. People wonder how that can be when their prices are usually more expensive. It's the secret of combining sales and coupons that make it the best place to shop!

I have to buy my perishables a few times a week. Milk, veggies and fresh fruit. I make a trip to Winco every few months to stock up on items I get in their bulk section (like seeds and nuts that I use to make granola). I hate Walmart (but most ofyou already know that) but I do get sucked in to grocery shop there a few times a month. I live right across the street from Albertson's so it's no big deal to go there several times a week. The other stores I plan my trips.

I have a lot of chicken, meat, and other staples in my freezer. I also have a big stockpile of basic things in my "pantry", like canned tomatoes, spices, and such to cook with. So on a weekly basis all I do is fill in the cracks with sale items to renew my stockpile. Every now and then I shop specifically for a certain menu, but usually I plan my menus around what I already have and what I am getting a great deal on that week.

I am trying to eat healthier and not purchase as many processed and sugary foods. I prefer to eat fresh. It is a process with my kids but we are starting a little at a time. I no longer buy fruit snacks, boxed mixes or dinners, certain kinds of cold cereal and things like that on a regular basis. We do have them every now and then. For example, bought pop tarts on a great sale awhile ago to have a couple of boxes when we went camping for a special treat. I try to make most things from scratch and make my own homemade mixes.

I also get asked how much I spend on groceries every month. You do need to keep in mind that prices vary by area and our needs change at times. But I normally spend around $375 a month on food for our family of six. Well, I guess I should say family of five since my baby only drinks breastmilk. :) That is only $93 a week for mostly healthy and fresh foods! Not to bad. When I see news stories on how a family of five spends $3,000 a month on food, that just blows me away! It can be done on a budget, people. I have MORE food now by couponing than I did before and I spent more money then.

I also get asked if we ever splurge. And the answer is YES. We do go out to eat every now and then, and I will get lazy and give the kids cold cereal for dinner. I am not superwoman. I just try to keep a vision and goal and stick to it as much as I can. Life happens!

How about you? What do you buy and how much do you spend?

Frugal Living Friday: Save those containers

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I shared this tip last year but I thought I would again since I have so many new readers. It's pretty simple...but if you have little children that love to pretend play, don't throw away those spice containers. They are perfect for adding to a play kitchen. They will feel just like mommy!

This tip can also extend to empty cereal, cracker, brownie and cake boxes, and really any empty food container. Then playtime seems more real and fun!

I don't know about you, but these dry erase markers are on my kids' school supply list every year. And they always need replacement markers throughout the year too. I think I sent 4-5 packs with my oldest son through all of last year. They are usually priced between $3.99-$5.99 depending on where you shop.

Through Saturday night at Walgreens, use their in-ad coupon to get them for only $1.99 a pack! What a deal! I am stocking up.

Like I said, many of the coupon deals circulating around were gone at my Target. Hopefully I can get them next time. Did you get any deals at Walmart or Target this week?

Thrifty Tip Thursday

I love to organize. I also love to keep lots of stuff.

It seemed I always had lots of papers, little things I wanted to keep but I didn't know where to put. Even papers my kids brought home from school or something they made in church. I just didn't have time to always put them in permanent homes. Does this sound familiar?

Here is how I conquer that problem! I found this idea from Creating Keepsakes a few years ago. Take these manila folders, label them for every month of the year and attach a ring.

I hang these on the side of my fridge on a hook. Now when I have those misc papers, little notes, pictures drawn in church or just things I want to keep but not sure what to do with....I put them in the monthly folder! I have done this for 2 years now and it really helps me keep things in order. It is one of my favorite organizing techniques!

I take this idea a step further. At the end of every month I write a monthly summary of what we did and what happened that I want to remember. It only takes a few minutes. This came in handy just a few months ago when I was completing a 2007 digital scrapbook of our family. All I had to do is go back to these folders, pull out our monthly summaries I made and I had all the journaling I needed. It brought back memories I never would have recalled if I hadn't had written that stuff down. I was so glad I did.

Hot Deal Alert!

While at Target yesterday they had LOTS on clearance! Call your store to see if they have the same items on clearance.
  • Shoes 30%-50% off
  • Toys 30% off
  • Boys clothes 30%-50% off
  • Infants clothes 30% off

There were LOTS of toys and shoes on clearance! I like to wait until the sale reaches 75% off before I buy. Check the approximate markdown schedule to help with that, although it does vary by store. I call my store every couple of days to see where the sale is at before I drive there. I am hoping to snag some great deals on shoes soon!

My Storage

I have had many people ask me about this small picture on my sidebar of my storage asking me to explain more about it. Yes, it is my garage! I don't have a pantry in my kitchen so my garage is my pantry. I do have a free-standing pantry inside, but it is small so the bulk of my food is in the garage.

First I need to explain that I believe in having a food storage (or stockpile like others call it). My church encourages it's members to be prepared for emergencies like disasters or unemployment and by having a food storage you can have peace of mind knowing you can survive if you needed to. I will link to more information on that later in my post.

Now, back to my photo....

(For those who know me...pay no attention to that Heineken box...no we did not start drinking...I got it with some canning jars years ago and never changed the box.)

First, this picture was taken six months ago, back in January 2009. This area in my garage looks MUCH different now. Lots of this food is gone and more has taken it's place. It is not as full now, I have more empty space on the shelves. My storage looks different depending on the sale items I get. For example, much of that instant oatmeal is gone, and lots, lots of salsa has taken it's place. Although that is disappearing fast too!

Those large bags of rice on the top shelf are gone. I had purchased them at Costco to dry pack for longer term food storage, and I did that not long after I took this photo. Everything you see here is my short-term food storage, six months or less. My long term-food storage I don't touch. Much of that is dry packed in #10 cans. I keep those in my crawl space (up on wood slats of course), under the beds in my house, in closets, and the garage. Basically, anywhere I can find space.

The large buckets are full of flour, white sugar and brown sugar. They are my regular rotation of food. Like I stated above, my longer term food storage I have dry packed. The backpacks on the top shelf are our 72 hour kits. Yes, we do have water storage. We currently have about a month's worth of water storage for our family in two 55 gallon drums and other containers. Those are also in the garage.

In the photo above I have lots on the floor in my garage...toilet paper, paper towels, etc. In May my husband built these creative shelves on the ceiling in our garage to store more of our stockpile:

It has been a big help having more space to store! We don't live in a very big house (1605 sq ft) and it's a 2 car garage. We don't have much storage space in the house so I have had to be very creative with where to find room for all of our food. My husband just threw stuff up there when he built them that day and I have yet to organize it the way I want. But I am thrilled with the shelves.
My food storage areas and items have changed with my needs over the years. Here is a photo of my food storage area in the garage (the same area as the first photo) in 2006:

Those two photos are drastically different! At the time of this photo I had just had my third child and my other two children were much smaller (thus consuming less food). Plus, I didn't have those shelves all over the wall in my garage then. But couponing was still awesome! In fact couponing was so much better then. All those brownie mixes I got for only .50 cents and cereal for .30 cents a box. Albertson's was a good couponing store then too just not as many people did couponing. Prices are higher now but that's inflation for you.

Anyway, so what I do after I shop a big stock-up sale is re-organize my area in the garage. I try to keep the items that expire first in the front so I know what to use first. I also keep items together that are similar: condiments, salsa, taco shells, spaghetti sauce, etc. Then I can also find items quickly and they don't get lost on the shelf. Much of that stuff is hidden in the photo above from the bikes hanging or the boxes of other food, but I always know where things are. I can ask my husband to get me something from the garage and he will not be able to find it...but I know where it is! :) :)

If you are starting to begin your stockpile or food storage, just start putting food anywhere you have space. I mentioned above that we keep food under our beds. I put bed risers on all the beds to fit more under them. Utilize your space, and you will be surprised at what you can come up with. I can do it, so I know you can too!

Frugal Living Friday: Crafty Goodness

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Summertime is a great time to do some crafts with the kids. There is a lot of down time and crafts are also a way to keep their minds occupied and thinking. Craft supplies can be expensive though, so try coming up with a few ideas with what you have at home. Plus, when you are thinking about using what you have it keeps you from buying more stuff.

Use cardboard boxes
Boxes have endless possibilities! Make a stove for a little girl, a bed for a doll, an airplane...you decide. Kids can go crazy with a box. Most of the time they play better with a box than with the toys that came in it.

Have a marching band
Gather up empty toilet paper and paper towel tubes, empty oatmeal canisters, empty formula cans...anything of that nature that you can make into an instrument. Decorate them with markers and use rice or beans inside to make noise. Take empty plastic water bottles and fill with beans for a toddler to shake as a maraca. Family Fun has more ideas on this.

Here are a few more fun and thrifty craft ideas for this summer:
Lazy summer lunches
Many fun ways to recycle laundry detergent caps for crafts
Painting rocks

Frugal Living Friday: Homemade laundry detergent

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Have you made homemade laundry detergent before? I must confess I have not. But recently I have had a few people tell me how FABULOUS it is, and CHEAP too!

Today's FFL post is from Tricia, over at Jacobson's Journaling and Jibberish. She emailed me about her recipe for homemade laundry detergent. I have to try it! Thanks for sharing with us Tricia! Here is what she has to say:

With this front loader I've recently acquired, I didn't want to have to buy the expensive front loader detergent that it "requires". But I wasn't sure how much I could use of the regular detergent and have it NOT suds up too much. This recipe is the one that the Duggar's use... you know, the "18 kids and counting" family on TV? They've got more front loaders than I have kids, so I figure if they trust this recipe then I sure can!

I bought: new 5 gallon bucket $4.64
lid: $1.27
Borax: $2.98
Baking Soda: $1.00
3 bars of Ivory soap (any non/low-sudsing soap will do): $1.07

I grated one bar of soap into an old pot, added 4 cups of hot tap water, and melted it on the stove. Then I poured that into my bucket, and added 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/2 cup of Borax.

When it looked like that was all stirred up and dissolved, I added more hot tap water to fill my bucket and put the lid on. I'll let that sit overnight, and when I run out of my super-expensive Tide detergent made especially for front loaders, I'll use that empty container and funnel this in!

Update: I bought an oil essence at my favorite bead store for $3.50 and added HALF of it to the bucket. LOVE the smell, and can't wait to see how well it cleans!

I wanted to see how much this costs per bucket, so I measured out the Borax and baking soda I bought. You get 12 cups of Borax = 24 buckets, and 4 cups of baking soda = 4 buckets. So I'm spending 74 CENTS per 5 gallon bucket, and thinking this will last me more than a month with a family of 6. I usually buy Surf powder detergent for about $12, and it's gone within the month.

NOTE: See Tricia's full post at her blog for more detailed pictures and info on making your own laundry detergent, and other laundry tips! Do you have any laundry tips to share?

Thrifty Tip Thursday: Popsicles

Popsicles are a big hit in the hot summer months. Our house is no exception!

However, I do try to keep the sugar intake down too....so I make homemade popsicles most of the time.

You know how you end up with overripe fruit and a little bit of yogurt left no one wants to eat? Put those in the blender with some ice, orange juice concentrate and whatever else you have, blend up nice and pour into popsicle molds. I have the vintage Tupperware Ice Tups. I love them. If you don't have popsicle molds you can use small paper cups with a popsicle stick.

I carry it a bit further and add in carrots and spinach from my garden so the kiddos get more nutrition. When I use spinach I add in pineapple and honey to sweeten it and blueberries and strawberries so it doesn't look so green.

I love being able to say to my kids when they are asking for their 4th popsicle... "Sure, you can have another popsicle!"
