Ebates

Do you know about Ebates?

It's an online rebate program. When you shop online through Ebates, you get cash back on your purchases. Each time you order online, you can get up to 25% back, depending on the store you shop through!

I have been a member of Ebates since 2001. Just this past Christmas I got $15 back on my purchases, and I spent $23! I like to combine online sales, free shipping and other promos with the additional cash back with Ebates. Then I double or triple my savings! Nothing beats those prices...even Walmart!

What I like about Ebates:
1. They pay me via Paypal...quick and easy!
2. You only need a minimum of $5 in your account to get paid every 3 months.
3. They have fabulous customer service!
4. Your orders are really easy to track. Their website is really simple to understand and navigate.

SIGN UP HERE to get going with Ebates. It's easy, fast, and fun to see your savings add up!

PLUS, when you sign up and make your first online purchase you will get an extra $5 put into your account! Awesome!

Ebates also has some great promos going on right now. Several sites are offering double the cash back for Mother's Day.

Frugal Living Friday: Fabric Softener Sheets

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Do you buy fabric softener sheets like Bounce? I do. I like them better than using Downy in my washer. But did you know that there are so many more uses for fabric softener sheets besides using them in the dryer? Plus, each sheet is good for more than one use. Don't ever just use them once then throw them away. Here are some additional ways I use my fabric softener sheets to help me get more for my money!

1. I put them in the bottom of my garbage cans (under the liners) to keep them smelling fresh & keep odors at bay. It really works!
2. After I have used one sheet in the dryer a few times I use them to dust electronics...like the tv and clocks in my bedroom. It helps the dust stay away longer.
3. Using the used sheets as "swiffer dry cloths" when I sweep my floor. (mostly in the bathroom)
4. I always use my softener sheets at least 3 times in the dryer before using them on something else.

Check out these links for many more uses for dryer sheets!

How do you stretch the life of fabric softener sheets? Have any of you made your own dryer sheets?

GIVEAWAY: You Can Make This.com...a $50 value!

YouCanMakeThis.com was created by a mom who wanted to provide downloadable instructions on how to make just about anything from children's boutique clothing and jewelry, to handbags, home decor and more. What makes the site unique is that these instructions are written by everyday moms who have an expertise in an area. They are written in a way that makes you feel you have a friend sitting right next to you, telling you what to do next. They all have detailed instructions and step-by-step full-color photos so even the most "craft-challenged" person can make these items for their homes and families.

You can make this!

In fact, if you'd like to try out some products for free, you can sign up for their FREE newsletter (click the banner above to take you to the sign-up page). After sign-up, you'll receive a link to your email inbox asking you to confirm subscription. Simply click on that link, and you'll receive all of these product instructions pictured here, plus an online video and digital scrapbooking frames.

Would you like to win a $50 bundle of even more DIY instructions? You can learn how to make a Child/Adult Apron Set, Women's Reversible Wrap Skirt, The "She Loves Me, She Loves Me KNOT" Handbag, The Reversible Patchwork Bucket Hat, Easy-Fit Pants, and Boys Ties. Remember, even if you've never sewn before, the site believes that you REALLY CAN make these things!

And yes, YOU REALLY CAN! I personally even tried out one of the patterns, the boys ties. And it was easy! I can be kinda dumb when it comes to stuff like this but if I can do it, anyone can! Didn't they turn out great? I want to make more matching ties for them now. I made these ties to match a dress my daughter had and we had photos taken. Great for Easter!

Here is what you need to do to enter. You can enter up to 6 times to improve your chances of winning!

1. Check out YouCanMakeThis.com and come back and post something you'd like to learn how to make.

2. Post about this giveaway on your blog and post the link.

3. Join my Facebook Group.

4. Twitter about this giveaway, or start following me on Twitter!

5. Add my button to your blog (or blogs).

6. Subscribe to my feed, email updates, or start following my blog.

For each entry, please leave a separate comment. So if you want all 6 entries, you will need to leave 6 comments.

Frugal Living Friday: A clever way to use rotting citrus

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Today's Frugal Living Friday post is a guest post from Sarah, over at A Thrifty Mom. Sarah is a blogger who lives in my area and always has great sales and tips to share. Thanks Sarah for sharing our Frugal Living Friday tip today!

Maybe it was the way I was raised, But I hate to waste food. Growing up we always made sure to eat our “leftovers” if the food did go bad, we would feed it to the dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, or anything else that was hungry. We would NEVER dream of throwing any kind of food away. Well now that I am off the farm, and live in a subdivision I can’t exactly throw my table scraps out the back door. My good friend Linda just came back from Arizona. She brought back a bunch or fresh oranges, they were delicious and my kids ate them every morning for breakfast. We left for spring break….we only had 2 oranges left. But they did not do so well while we were gone.

I learned this trick from a friend, she does it with the left over oranges she juices. Cut them up up into wedges or small cubes. Place them in a microwave bowl, add enough water to cover the oranges half way. Then place them in the microwave on high for 4-5 minutes. The water will start to boil and fill your microwave with a great orange smell ( to help get rid of the taco, meatloaf smell from the leftovers last week) Not only will you microwave smell great but it will also, get all steamy. Take a damp rag and wipe the inside down, the stuck on splatters will wipe right off.

Be care full taking it out, IT WILL BE HOT. Take the steaming hot water and orange pulp and dump it down your garbage disposal. I let it sit there just for a second, and let it steam. Then I turn my grinder on with the water running. It leaves your sink smelling nice and clean.

What do you do with old fruit?

Exclusive Offer: ALL YOU magazine subscription @ $17.99 for two years!

***OFFER IS CLOSED, BUT WATCH IN A FEW MONTHS I WILL DO IT AGAIN!***

What would you say if I told you I had an exclusive offer for a two year subscription to ALL YOU magazine?

I DO! Starting today through April 27th here from my blog, you can order a two year subscription to ALL YOU magazine for only $17.99!

NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALL YOU MAGAZINE?
I’m sure many of you are already familiar with the fabulous manufacturer coupons that are in every issue of ALL YOU magazine. Many times there are over $20 worth of manufacturer coupons you will not find anywhere else! Plus, many times there is a coupon for a free item. Last month it was a coupon for free mascara. I don't normally spend money on magazines, but this magazine is an exception, especially at this fantastic price!

As a brief summary, ALL YOU magazine is only carried in Walmart stores at a price of $2.24 after their 10% discount. The only other way to get ALL YOU is by subscription price, which is around $22 per year. HOWEVER, at this exclusive subscription price of 2 years for $17.99 (which includes no tax, no shipping), you’re getting it for just $0.75 an issue! You can easily recoup the cost of this subscription with just a couple issue's worth of coupons. Isn't that awesome????

Here are all the details. PLEASE read them all to make sure you understand how it works. I have done this and it is really simple. Thanks to Carmella Fryar for setting up this fantastic deal!

To order, please visit Carmella’s personal Southern Living at Home website - you must use this link to get the discounted price!

1. Click on Our Products then How To Purchase
2. Type in Want in the hostess first name field then click Continue
3. Select Want It All
4. In the search box type 40776 then click Go
5. Click on All You Personal Subscription then Select this Item
6. Then just follow the screens through checkout!
7. It takes about 8 weeks to receive your first issue once you see your payment post.

DISCOUNT NOTE: The total will show $19.95 at checkout and on your invoice. Your discount adjustment will be made after you checkout but before your card is charged, and the final amount charged will be $17.95. This is because Carmella is offering the discount as an independent consultant. It is not at the corporate level, so the automatic response will not reflect the discount.

Answers to FAQ’s
1. This is for a 24-issue/2-year subscription to ALL YOU. To verify, you can BROWSE the full catalog from Our Products and turn to Page 79 for the full description.
2. The magazine will ship to the name/address you supply in the order. There are no additional shipping fees or taxes. Please DO NOT SELECT THE DIRECT SHIP OPTION during checkout.
3. If you want to order as a gift, please fill in the name address for the person to whom you are sending please email Carmella (j.fryar@comcast.net) to let her know your name and the name you are sending to so payment can be reconciled.
4. To renew a current subscription, follow order procedures and be sure to enter your name and address exactly as it appears on your current subscription.
5. Please pay with a credit card during checkout. Please do not click submit more than once as this can cause multiple charges.
6. After you see your payment post with your card issuer you should be able to track the status of your subscription shortly thereafter using ALL YOU online customer service at www.allyou.com/customerservice. Depending on– where ALL YOU is in their label printing process it can take 3 months to receive your first issue.
7. Because this is such a great offer, no refunds can be issued once the order has been submitted.

Frugal Living Friday: Freezer Jam

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I love freezer jam! Especially strawberry freezer jam. A few years ago I discovered a much easier way to make freezer jam instead of using box pectin. It's these pectin packets from Ball...no cook freezer jam pectin. I can literally make freezer jam in 15 minutes. I also love using this method because it takes less sugar. It's only 1 1/2 cups of sugar per pectin packet.
First, crush your fruit. Don't puree it, however or your jam will be runny. I like mine slightly chunky. For one packet of the freezer jam pectin, you will need 4 cups of crushed fruit. Also, you will need 1 1/2 cups of sugar and jars or containers for your jam. Notice my jars...they are recycled jars I have used over and over again for my freezer jam. I think it's a waste of money to buy those pretty jam containers in the store (unless you are giving them as gifts) so I use any empty jar I can find at home, a dressing jar, pickle jar, you name it. It's one way to be more frugal.
Then you mix your sugar and pectin together. (all these are the directions on the back of the pectin package, by the way.)

Put with your crushed fruit and stir for 3 minutes.

After stirring it will look like this. A little more runny. That's why you don't want to completely puree your fruit to begin with. Now you are ready to put the jam into your jars or containers.

After putting into the jam into the jars, let stand until jelled, for about 30 minutes. DONE! Label and put into your freezer. Easy and so yummy!

Do you have a favorite way to make freezer jam?

Stockpiling Mistakes

Stockpiling or building a usable food storage is important for me and my family. However, in my ten years of marriage and avidly doing this, I have found there are many mistakes you don't want to make!

1. Take note of certain items go on sale and plan accordingly.

In the past I have gotten really excited about great sales, only to find later on lots of what I had purchased was stale. So now I try to only buy as much as I know we will eat before the next sale hits. For example, Albertson's has a really good Quaker sale twice a year. That's when I stock up on my oatmeal. I buy enough to last us until the next sale, unless the expiration date is over a year away.

2. Only buy what you know your family will use.

It can be tempting to buy everything you see on sale, clearance, or free after rebate. But for me, I only have so much room in my house and I can only afford space for the items I know I will use. It is good to get those items for donations and charities though, I am just talking about storing them for my family. I have learned over the years certain things we just don't use so matter the price, and I leave them for others to get.

3. Try a new food item first before adding it to your stockpile.

I only made this mistake once, but I know people who do it all the time. I don't see the point in buying 20 boxes of a new kind of granola bar if we won't eat it. Buy one box on the sale, try it first, then go back for more if you like it.

4. Don't stockpile items too close to the expiration date.

Watch those expiration dates! Many times at cheap sales I have noticed in the store the expiration date is only a month away. No use buying 20 boxes to last a few months! No one likes stale food. Even deodorant and toothpaste lose their effectiveness after the expiration date. I personally stockpile items with an expiration date of at least 6 months in advance. I know approximately how much we use of everything we use so that helps.

5. Remember there is always another sale.

I have also learned not to go too crazy at sales. There will always be another sale! If you buy a ton of cereal at one sale you won't have much of a variety. Not that I don't stockpile a lot of cereal, because I do. I have just found we like variety so I try to balance it out between sales.

6. Don't let your food or other items go to waste.

Organize your stockpile or food storage. Know where everything is, and try to rotate it. My house is fairly small, but I know where every tube of toothpaste and every jar of salsa is. If you do find an item that is close to the expiration date or even past, don't throw it out! I use some canned food items at my local library to pay fines. Or donate food and hygiene items to the food bank. Many items will stay good for a small time after the expiration date, but some do go stale.

Here is agreat article I have in my file about food storage mistakes to avoid:

The Seven Major Mistakes of Food Storage by Vicki Tate

What mistakes or pitfalls have you noticed that need to be avoided in food storage or stockpiling?

Menu Plan Monday: April 6

It seems that every week something disrupts my menu plan....which isn't too big of a deal because I have so much stuff in my freezers that I can adapt. I wasn't feeling too well and was so tired one day last week (I am 33 weeks pregnant after all) so instead of sticking to my menu plan I pulled out some frozen chicken I had cooked in an Italian sauce a few months ago. I thawed it, whipped up some rice, opened a can of corn and we were good to go! The next few days here are supposed to be around 70 degrees, so we are starting up the grill! Yay!

Here is this week's plan. Join Menu Plan Monday over at OrgJunkie today!

MONDAY: Turkey burgers on the grill, apples with dip & jello salad

TUESDAY: Four pasta beef bake (think I will ever make this one? sheesh) & broccoli

WEDNESDAY: Mexican Manicotti & strawberry pretzel salad

THURSDAY: Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup

FRIDAY: Leftovers

SATURDAY: Spaghetti, homemade breadsticks & veggie

EASTER SUNDAY: Crockpot Pork Chops, Creamed Potatoes, Resurrection Rolls, salad, & Angel Food Cake roll for dessert

Frugal Living Friday: Homemade Bread

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I am not the best bread maker. I have many flops. Every time I make bread I experiment. My mom is the expert bread maker....she told me once you become good by practicing. I guess I am doing that. Why make homemade bread? It is so much healthier for you than store bought bread. Cheaper too. If you do buy the bread that IS healthy for you, then you are paying close to $4 per loaf. That is not thrifty at all.

I recently was given a wonderful bread recipe that has turned out EVERY SINGLE TIME! Just look at how the bread looks. YUM! It's nice and spongy and soft too. My kids love it. I think the secret I learned was to sponge the dough (you let it sit for a specified time...see recipe). I hadn't done that before and it makes a huge difference in how the bread turns out!

We are a whole wheat family. I only use white bread on special occasions. Most of the flour is whole wheat that I ground up in my grinder. I usually put a few cups of white flour in the bread though. Here is the recipe. Thanks Sarah for sharing the recipe with me to begin with. Enjoy!

(These are proportions for a Bosch mixer. If you have a Kitchenaid, just cut it in half and I think that would work. It makes about 4 really big loaves or 5 med-small loaves.)

14-16 c. whole wheat flour (10-12 c. unground)
2 rounded T. yeast
1/2 c. high-gluten flour
1/4 c. dough enhancer (or 2 T. lemon juice or 500 mg vit C)
6 c. very warm water
1/2 c. vegetable oil
1/2 c. honey or brown sugar (it turns out better with honey)
1 1/2 T. salt

Directions: Mill wheat so it is fresh and warm. Place 9 cups fresh flour into mixer with kneading arm. Add dry yeast, and gluten and pulse to mix. Add water and mix for 1 minute. Turn off mixer, cover, and let dough sponge for 10 minutes. (this makes the bread have a lighter texture.) Add oil, honey, lemon juice, and salt. Turn on mixer, and quickly add remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, until dough forms a mass and cleans the sides of the bowl. (I generally add a few more cups of whole wheat and then finish it off with a few cups of white flour.) Turn mixer to high and knead for 8 minutes. If kneading by hand, knead at least 12 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic.

Preheat oven to 150 during this time. Lightly oil hands and counter surface. Divide dough into equal portions. Shape into loaves and place in greased bread pans. Turn off oven. Place bread in oven, arranging pans with space between to allow heat to circulate freely. Set kitchen timer, and watch closely. Let rise until almost double in bulk, approximately 30-35 minutes. Leave bread in oven and turn heat to 350. Bake for 30-35 minutes until light golden brown. Immediately remove from pans and let cool on wire rack. Store in plastic bags in freezer to preserve nutrients in wheat.
