Family Fun Magazine for only $5 per year

There are always deals floating around for Family Fun Magazine, which by the way, is my FAVORITE magazine ever! I have subscribed (mostly free) to this magazine for 8 years now. It is full of great crafty ideas, fun family recipes, and AWESOME birthday ideas!

A reader (and cousin!) Amber, emailed me about this great offer she found: You can order up to 4 subscriptions to Family Fun for only $5 a piece! What a deal. It's a great idea for gifts for your friends or family members. GO HERE for the details.

Also, I posted last week about how you can get a free subscription to Family Fun. If that offer is still going you should do that one for yourself!

Thanks Amber!

My request for YOU

I really, really need you guys to help me with this!

I receive so many comments, emails and responses that I really want to answer. However, most of my readers do not have their email addresses added into their profiles on Blogger. So I cannot respond directly to your questions. It works like this:

Did you know that you can receive comment notification via email? If you haven't already taken advantage of this service, you need to activate it on your blog. If you don't know how, it's really easy. From your Blogger dashboard, select the "Settings" option. From the settings page, select the "Comments" tab. It will bring up a new page, scroll to the bottom and you will see "Comments Notification Email" at the very bottom with a box to enter your email address in.

Add your email address and save your new settings. What I love about this feature is that when I receive a comment, even if my post was a year old, I will still get that comment via email. That way, I don't have to search through each post and check the posts for new comments.

What is really nice about this feature, though, is that when I get a comment, if the commenter has an email address set up in their profile, I can respond to their comment via email! I love this option, but it only works if you have an email address set up in your profile.

I cannot get on my blog and reply to every question, especially when a comment is left on an older post. I would LOVE IT if I could reply to you directly, no matter what post you comment on...even if the post is a year old!

So, my request is that you put your email address in your profile. This is really simple, too, and if you don't want to put your main email on your profile, create a new email address through hotmail or gmail (both free) that you feel comfortable posting for the internet to find.To add email to your profile, from the Dashboard click on the link "Edit Profile". When you are directed to the new page, add your email address under the Identity section. This is also where you can add a picture and change the name that displays on your posts.

THANKS EVERYONE!

Albertson's shopping trip

This morning (early!) I went to Albertson's before I had to get my son off to school. My store was still well stocked on the cereal, except the Trail Mix Crunch which was getting low. As you can see, I needed a few various other things besides the sale items, but I still only spent $19 on everything you see here! I actually had coupons for every single item except the eggs and celery!

Retail cost: $117.23
Out of pocket cost: $19
Percentage saved: 84%!!

The cereal averaged out to be .05 for all 15 boxes!! I spent $15.05 on all 15 boxes (after all my coupons) then I got back three $5 catalinas to use on my next order. I used those immediately on each order to help with my out-of-pocket cost. I did 3 separate transactions to get my $5 back each time. Read more details HERE.

My milk was free. See details on that HERE.

The candy cost me barely over $1 a bag. I combined store and manufacturer coupons to get that price. The store coupon is in their weekly and Sunday ad, and the manufacturer coupons were coupons I had saved from inside a Valentine's box! (remember, save your coupons!)

The pineapple was .73 per can. They are on sale for $1 a can, then I used 2 .55/1 coupons from yesterday's SS insert.

Tostadas were .99 after using a $1 coupon. Even my salad I had a coupon for! It cost me $1.79.

The Kraft dressing and crackers are part of the KRAFT PROMO. I ended up spending $3.38 on both boxes of crackers AND the dressing!

Have a good week shopping!

Another Post cereal coupon!

Good news! There should be this coupon coming in tomorrow's paper that goes with the great Post cereal sale (see my post below):

$1/2 Shredded wheat, Raisin bran, GrapNuts nuggets or flakes 10oz or larger
Smart Source insert

This might be a good Sunday to get multiple coupons if you don't get them already. Also, keep in mind every area gets different coupons. Even areas within 45 minutes of me get different coupons some weeks. So check your paper first.

Albertson's Post cereal sale next week

Remember several days ago when I mentioned a Post sale coming up?

Here are the details! Thanks to PYP!

Starting this Sunday, March 29th, the following Post cereals are on sale:

Honey Bunches of Oats 13-18 oz
Raisin Bran 20 oz
Shredded Wheat
Post Selects 13-16 oz
Grape Nuts 24 oz

According to the ad, the sale runs for ten days. The cereals will all be $2.07 each or $1.57 a box when you buy two. BUT....
when you buy 5 boxes you will get a $5 catalina back! Remember, catalina's are those coupons that print at the register. It is a coupon good towards your next shopping purchase.

So now you are paying .67 a box for the cereal! But wait...there are coupons too!

Post Selects Cereals, any $1/2 (4-12-09) SS-3/1
Post Trail Mix Crunch, any $2/1 printable
$1/2 Shredded wheat, Raisin bran, GrapNuts nuggets or flakes 10oz or larger
Smart Source insert in tomorrow's paper (3/29)

I let you know about this coupon several days ago so that hopefully you could print it before it disappears. Using the coupons will make the cereal even cheaper, between free to .27 a box depending on what varitey you buy.

REMEMBER: If you are planning on buying more than 5 boxes at a time, like 10, you need to do separate transactions! Only one $5 catalina will print per deal. When you buy 5 or more, you will get one catalina back. So do separate transactions to get all your catalina's! You can use them on your next purchase and get a $5 catalina on that purchase. I just did it this morning.

Yay!

Frugal Living Friday: Stretching out the life of your workbooks

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I saw this idea somewhere in blogland awhile ago. I don't remember where. But I love it! Workbooks for kids can get much more use than they do. Instead of letting your kids do all the pages and then it's done, you put all the pages of the workbook into page protectors. Then put the pages into a binder. The kids can use dry erase markers on the page protectors, then wipe off! You can use your workbook pages again and again! Isn't it a great idea? It works for me! It's also fun for the kids. My 3 year old loves it.

If you already printed the coupon, it is a legitimate coupon, but you will have to decide for yourself if you feel comfortable using it or not.

Frugal Living Friday: Recycled Gifts

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Do you ever find yourself in a tight spot when you need a quick birthday or thank you gift? Take those empty Crystal Light containers and turn them into a cute gift! (This would be perfect for you if you stocked up on Crystal Light at Albertson's last week.) I made several into "yummy jars" that I filled with candy and gave away.

I made these back in 2006 so the supplies are a bit outdated. I have made countless "yummy jars" since then, I just haven't taken pictures. The last ones I made a few months ago turned out super cute! I gave them to my regular babysitters for Christmas gifts.

Supplies needed:

empty Crystal Light container (mine are actually Great Value brand)
glue or adhesive
scrapbook paper
embellishments of your choice
letter stickers

Measure your paper to the size you want around the container. As you can see in my pictures I did a few different kinds of paper, and I tore some edges instead of cutting them. Then glue the paper on. I just used a really good glue stick. Then I added the letter stickers and embellishments. I have a circle punch that I used to punch a paper circle to glue to the lid. Then fill with your recipient's favorite candy!

This is a thrifty idea for me because I have lots and LOTS of these supplies on hand! Try to use any kind of container and craft supplies you have on hand to make this idea as frugal as possible.

Another recycled gift idea is making an altered Altoid Tin with keepsakes photos. I did this last year for my parents and youngest brother before they left home for two years. It turned out fabulous...but unfortunately I couldn't find the pictures on my computer to share.

Shopwiki: Baby and Toddlers Buying Guide

How many times have you purchased a baby item (whether it be clothing, toys, equipment, etc) only to find out it was not really what you wanted? Maybe that double stroller you bought needed to be a double-wide instead of the front-to-back kind. Maybe you needed a car seat with different features than the one you purchased. Isn't that frustrating? It has happened to me many times.

Here is a great solution! Shopwiki for baby and toddlers is a website where you can get detailed information on over 200,000,000 products from every store. Instead of looking at a handful of websites to find the right product you are looking for, you can get all the information you need on Shopwiki. It's a one stop information site!

For example, I am expecting my fourth child in only 10 weeks. Since I need to check out car seats, I can go to the car seat category and find information on all five types of car seats. Did you even know there are five types of car seats? I find all the detailed information I need, such as:

  • What to look for in car seats
  • Features
  • Safety Tips
  • Flying without car seats
  • Big Brands

There are even links to safety recall lists, installation help, and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

You will find the same features in every category in addition to car seats. Categories like strollers, outdoor fun and travel, bags and carriers, and much more! You can even browse categories that include Fun and Learning, At Home, Baby Care, and Clothing.

I think Shopwiki would be most helpful for first-time parents. Since I have had three other children, I will still be using much of the same baby equipment/items that I already have. But I remember as a first time parent being overwhelmed with all the choices and products on the market. I would have found Shopwiki very helpful when I was a first-time mom. Shopwiki for baby and toddlers does not offer price comparisons, however. I think that additional feature would be a huge plus.

If you are going to be a first-time parent or know someone who is, tell them about Shopwiki for baby and toddlers. It might be just what you need.

Albertson's and competitor coupons

I talked with the store manager at my Albertson's this morning. There has been much confusion around here lately with what coupons Albertson's will accept, including the Walgreens Register Rewards. Here is what I was told:

As of March 18th, ALL Albertson's will no longer be accepting any competitor coupons. However, this DOES NOT include Walgreens Register Rewards. RR are manufacturer catalina coupons and Albertson's gets reimbursed 100% for those. So even after March 18th Albertson's WILL STILL be accepting Walgreen's RR. I am so excited about that!

If you have any questions I suggest you talking to your store manager. But I know for my area this is what is happening.

Hurry and use those store competitor coupons by tomorrow!

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Here is the recipe so many of you have been emailing me about. I have been making these cookies since I was about 10 years old. They are sooo good! It's a never fail recipe.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
2 c. oatmeal (quick or regular)
1/2 c. chocolate chips (or more if you like!)
1 c. coconut (optional)

Cream together shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix up dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add to wet ingredients. Add in chocolate chips. Mix together well. Bake at 350 degrees for 7-10 minutes. Makes about 3-4 dozen.

Take your time

My blog is not only about couponing, finding deals and freebies. It's also about thrifty and smart living! Sure, I like to have a 'stockpile.' It is part of my food storage....my 3 month supply or longer even. But I only stockpile what I KNOW I will use. I learned years ago that even if something is a great deal, if I won't use it then it's still a waste of my money. You learn over time what you will use and what you think you will use. Building up a 3 month supply of items you use regularly takes some time. You hit a sale here and there, and it will happen before you know it.

Generally, if I can get free stuff I know I won't use (like toothbrushes...we use Sonic toothbrushes), I will still get some to add to my donation pile. But I still don't always get everything. For example, I am not getting any of the free after rebate items at Walgreens this month. My husband would not use the body wash and I have plenty of medicine on hand...enough for more than a year. So I will let others get those deals that could use them more than I.

I grew up in an extremely frugal household. I might even say cheap. But my parents taught me fabulous lessons that I have carried one with my family. My parents taught me that doing without is okay...in fact, is smart. When I was young I just thought they were being mean. What they were really teaching me was the value of money. They didn't buy me every little thing I wanted. And they taught by example. Very rarely did they buy things for themselves...whether it was clothing or other personal things. They didn't go on big trips. They didn't always buy the latest electronic gadget. They didn't buy new clothes on a regular basis. They taught me to "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."

In our society today, too many people want things NOW. They have no patience! It's all about me, me, me. "I deserve it," is something I hear a lot.

If you really want to get ahead, couponing, finding deals, and freebies are only a part of the story. A very small part really. Just stop spending so much! Being a smart spender or getting out of debt isn't rocket science. Just spend less that you earn. These are in no particular order, just my thoughts.

1. Start tracking your spending. This is KEY. You must know how much money you make and where it is going in order to save anything. You will be surprised how much you are spending on groceries if you don't already know.

2. Stop spending money on unnecessary things. If you really are honest with yourself, you could be spending less that you need to be in many areas. Read the highlighted link.

3. Get out of unnecessary debt. I am proud to say the only debt we have is our home loan. And, because we didn't get caught up in the whole "moving to a bigger house for really cheap" movement a few years ago we are not struggling right now like so many Americans. We have 2 cars, a van and a truck, that have been paid off for a few years. And we have no credit card debt. It is such a good feeling! Every time we purchase something for our home (even the big screen we bought last year) we pay with IN FULL at the time of payment. We always save and plan ahead. No debt!

4. Be thankful for what you have. I firmly believe that if people would be more thankful for their current situation, no matter what the case may be, we will always find ways to be thankful for what we have instead of always wanting more, more, more. Yes, deals and freebies can be addicting too, but be realistic.

5. Stop spending so much! Remember last year when I took a month off from spending? I looked at that old post and I didn't realize I forgot to post the results! It was AMAZING! I posted it on my personal blog, but copied it over to here. Read my results! (keep in mind gasoline prices were high then...)

I love keeping up this blog but it is also time consuming. Please understand that I cannot post every deal or every sale. But I will keep you informed and help you stay on track to being a smart spender!

Frugal Living Friday: The Best Frozen Cookie Dough

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I was talking with a friend about this last week and she had never thought of doing it, so I decided it would be a good FLF topic. Do you buy frozen cookie dough at the store? Well, no more! Did you know you can mix up a batch of your favorite cookie cookies at home and freeze the dough? Then you can have REAL homemade cookies at your convenience! Homemade not only tastes better, but it is better for you. There are so many preservatives, lots of sodium, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils in store bought items such as cookie dough.

Mix up a batch of your favorite cookies. I have a favorite recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. I doubled the batch, baked a couple dozen for our FHE treats, then decided to freeze the rest.I make cookie balls, place them on a large cookie sheet and then stick in the freezer. I usually leave them there for several hours so they can get hard.
After the cookie balls are frozen, put them into a Ziploc bag. I don't use my Food Saver on these because I know we will want to get into them soon! :) Now I have 60 cookie balls all ready to bake when I need or want some fresh cookies! You can let them completely thaw before baking, but I don't always do that because I am impatient. Sometimes they are only partly thawed when I bake. Depending on your cookie recipe and the ingredients, it might vary on the consistency of your baked cookie. Experiment with your favorite cookie recipes!

Store Coupon Policies UPDATED

Here is a list of store coupon policies. You might want to print these off and take them with you to the store in your coupon binder. Sometimes the cashiers just don't know their own store policy! Many cashiers or store managers just don't understand how coupons work. Keep in mind that store managers can still choose to deny coupon usage no matter what. Just remember to be kind and have a copy of the store policy with you when you shop in case of problems.

For example, Walmart's coupon policy states that they accept printable coupons, but my local Walmarts will no longer take printable coupons due to coupon fraud that has been happening. Please don't photocopy coupons!!

Couponing: Is it worth it?

I love deals. I love using coupons. I love rebates. And I love freebies.

When my oldest was a newborn, I would spend hours on the computer at home learning the ropes of freebies and deals. I learned a lot, made many friends online, and had fun getting freebies in the mail. I learned quickly how much your savings can add up!

I started couponing a couple of years later and the savings just got better! With a second child in our family, I needed to save more money. Now...six years later, 3 kids and a fourth on the way, I can safely say I am so happy that I know what I know! It has saved our budget more than once, and the amount of food, hygiene items, and household goods I have gotten for free are in the hundreds. My oldest is 8 1/2 now and already knows the ropes when it comes to coupons and deals.

Couponing takes some time at first...you have to get organized, understand how it works, and start to build up your stockpile. But it IS worth it! Here are some pictures to prove it. These are a few of my most recent shopping trips:
Total paid: overage of $2.06! I actually got paid to buy this stuff.

Total paid: $92 (that includes 5 pks of tp and 10 pks of diapers!)

Total paid: $2.49

I don't have a pictures of this one, but one of my best deals EVER was in 2004 at Fred Meyer. I got 40 boxes of Electrosol dishwasher detergent...FREE! I only paid sales tax.

**************************************************************

So how do YOU start couponing? Where do you even begin? Does the task seem daunting?

STEP 1: Understand what coupons are, what kinds of coupons there are, and how they work.

Coupons are incentives to buy products. Using coupons to your advantage doesn't mean always using every coupon out there. You have to be smart, combine the coupon with a sale or clearance price, rebates, and promotions. Coupons have expiration dates to watch. Some coupons can be doubled, which means if the coupon is $1/1 item, you would get $2/1 instead. Double coupons are special promotions run by the store. Ask stores in your area if they ever double coupons. That's one way you can get ahead! Always read the fine print on your coupons before you use them to make sure you are matching up the item and coupon correctly.

Manufacturer coupons: These are coupons put out by the companies to entice you to purchase their products. These kinds of coupons can be printable coupons, Sunday coupons, mailer coupons. It will say 'manufacturer coupon' at the top of the coupon. When you use these coupons on a product at the store, the store is reimbursed the value of the coupon plus 8 cents. You cannot combine two manufacturer coupons on the same product.

Store coupons: These coupons are store specific, usually in their weekly ads. Unless other stores accept competitor coupons, you can only use store coupons at the store specified. You CAN combine store coupons and manufacturer coupons on the same purchase. For example, lets say Walgreens has Trident gum on sale for $2 per package. They also have a store coupon in their weekly ad you can use that is $1 off each package. BUT, you also have a manufacturer coupon from the newspaper for another $1off. Use both coupons together and you will get free gum! All you will pay is sales tax.

Printable coupons: These coupons are found online. Printable coupons are manufacturer coupons. Generally you are allowed to print 2 copies of each coupon from printable coupon websites. It is illegal to photocopy coupons!! But you can print them in black and white.

Peelies: These are the coupons you find stuck to store items that you peel off. These are manufacturer coupons.

Blinkies: Coupons in the red boxes attached to store shelves. When you pull out the coupon, another one generates to be pulled out. These are also manufacturer coupons.

How do you use your coupons when purchasing items? Read your coupon. It will tell you how many items you need to buy to use it. It might say $1 off one item, or $1 off 2 items. There is also some common coupon terms and usage meanings that you need to understand.

"One coupon per purchase": This means that you can use one coupon per item, with the item considered to be the purchase. For example, if you had 5 identical packages of gum and 5 grocery coupons for that gum, you could use all 5 coupons for your order. You could not use 2 identical coupons if you were only buying one pack of gum because that would be more than "one coupon per purchase." Don't confuse this term with "one coupon per transaction." A transaction is your entire purchase order you are making, not individual items.

"One coupon per order": This means that you can only use that specific coupon once per order. If a shopper had more than one coupon, they could use one coupon per store visit, which would be one coupon per order.

"One coupon per household": This is the most restrictive coupon term. Some coupons are so generous that stores will limit their liability by making sure shoppers do not make multiple trips to the store to use several coupons.
Please remember that any store can make decisions on how they decide to interpret the coupons. Sometimes they don't understand the terms the way the manufacturer intended them to be interpreted. If you politely explain the terms to them, they are more likely to accept your coupon.

STEP 2: Organize your coupons! There are many ways to do this, and no right or wrong way. But organization is KEY to your ability to maximize your savings!

STEP 3: Begin using your coupons. Check out other posts on this subject:

When using coupons on Buy 1 Get 1 Free items, many times you can use 2 coupons...one for each item. The first coupon on the item you are buying, the second coupon for the item you are getting free. But this varies from store to store, so your mileage may vary.

Step #4 Begin to accumulate coupons! Sign up for free samples, promos, etc. Get multiple issues of the Sunday newspaper. When you get those coupons in the mail save them with your other coupons. Even if you think you might not use it, keep it. I can't tell you how many times I have benefited from having extra coupons, or coming upon an unexpected sale and having coupons that match up with an item.

Don't forget to also have an organized place at home for receipts! That is equally as important. One day I may do a post on how I organize my receipts. Anyone who knows me knows I am anal when it comes to our finances...and I keep all documentation!

You will also find this information helpful.

Coupon Insert Schedule (yes, there is a schedule! Amazing! Remember, there are no coupons on holiday weekends in the Sunday papers)
