Frugal Living Friday: Free Weekend Fun

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

There are many free and cheap activities to do around your town if you know where to look. One of my soapbox topics is making sure kids do fun, wholesome, and simple activities that are in our community. Too many parents spend hundreds of dollars on season passes to this or that or pay lots of money for activities that are fun, but not necessary. Decide what your budget can allow and stick to it! It is good for kids to not do everything they want to do. It teaches patience and self-discipline. Off my soapbox now...

So if you are dying to get out of the house tomorrow but don't want to spend much (if any) money, here is a list of activities to do this weekend and in the next month or so with your kids! There are also schedules on each of these websites for future activities, so write them down on your calendar.
  • Tomorrow! Build a #48 Racecar at Lowe's Build and Grow Workshops for kids. Time is 10:00am-11:00am at your local Lowe's store. Sign up online.
  • The Knack at Michaels stores: next activity is April 4th, a family fun activity day from 10am-2pm. Here is the schedule for the rest of the April.
  • Home Depot does a kids workshop once a month, on the first Saturday. Next activity is March 7th at 9:00am to build an HD Raceway.
  • Check with your local library about their kids programs. You might be surprised at what they have to offer! My boys recently earned free tickets to a pro hockey game by reading and writing an essay.
  • Attend a Barnes and Noble storytime with your child. There are crafts and often dress-up characters there too! Check here to see what is available at your local store.

When summer gets closer I will profile all the fun and free summer activities available!

If you live in my area, check out my previous post on this topic for free and discounted things to do around town.

Eating out?

Eating out is expensive when you do it as a family. Especially for us. All my kids are out of the "kids eat free" age bracket and my boys are like trash compactors. I can't believe how much they eat! We will eat out on special occasions at times and I almost always use a coupon with my meal. But even with a coupon with our family dinner rarely costs less than $25.

I LOVE this blog post by Make it From Scratch that gives comparison prices of eating out versus making dinner at home. Take a look! Making dinner from scratch at home is cheaper than you think.

Lots more deals listed HERE on PYP.

TIPS
Keep in mind that many times even doubling a coupon will still end up in a price that is not a great deal. So only get the item if it is something you really need and if the price is a steal after the doubling! Also, please look at your coupons and make sure they don't say DO NOT DOUBLE on them, and that your coupon matches up with the item you are purchasing. Also, my Kmart automatically rang up the doubles (not like last time, they had to manually enter them) so you won't get overages on any items.

My store was already out of most of the items I was going to get today. So get to your store soon for the best selection!

Frugal Living Friday: Homemade Condensed Soups

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Did you have any idea you can make your own condensed soups, like cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, etc.? YOU CAN! I found out about this awhile ago and decided to try it last week. And I am telling you....the homemade version tastes SO GOOD! I think I just might be sold. I did this on a weeknight when I needed a can of cream of chicken soup and didn't have one in the cupboard. No matter...I just whipped up my own! Here is a picture of mine when I was done:

I was making a chicken gravy for Hawaiian Haystacks for dinner that evening. And I will tell you....I have never had gravy that good! It tasted much better than when I use the condensed soup from the store. My family loved it too.

I found out about this from Everyday Food Storage, a fantastic blog that helps you use your food storage in everyday ways and recipes. If you don't look at her blog regularly, you should! Crystal even has how-to videos which are VERY helpful! Browse around her site a bit, but here are the direct links to what you need to know in making your own condensed soups.

Condensed Cream of Chicken
Condensed Cream of Mushroom
Condensed Cream of Celery
How to make Magic Mix (used to make the condensed soups)

I know it might sound weird, but try it! I couldn't believe it myself until I used it. If anything, they will be a bit healthier for you too.

Coupon Insert Schedule

Did you know there is a schedule for coupon inserts? Really! I had several people comment to me this past weekend about getting no coupons. I have posted before about this, but I figured I would post again since I have many new readers.

Print off this coupon schedule so you know when you will be getting coupons or no coupons. Generally, on holiday weekends there are no coupons issued. I am not sure the reason for this, but since I started couponing 6 years ago it has always been this way.

Remember, there are different inserts:

Smart Source
Red Plum (formerly Valassis)
Procter and Gamble

All inserts also have the dates on the spine, in small print. Make sure you keep all your inserts until all the coupons expire (unless you clip them all, of course). You never know when a good sale will come up!

TaylorTown Preview is also a favorite of many couponers. I used this schedule for years.

Valentine's Day Target Clearance

Target Valentine's Day stuff is marked down to 75% off now. One thing I like about Target's holiday clearance is that they often times have items on clearance that are not holiday specific! I got these Color Wonder Explosion kits for only .99 each! The markers were also .99 each and the 16 pk of crayons were .49 each. Great deals!

I love having items like these on hand (specifically the Color Wonder) for birthday gifts or incentive gifts for my kids. I like to make crayon rolls so the crayons are perfect for me since it's hard to find 16 pk crayons. Regular price on the Color Wonder was $3.99.

There were also some good household items on clearance. 3 packs of Softsoap for $1.17, Suave body wash for $1.30. I combined both those deals with coupons and I got the body wash for .80 each and the Softsoap 3 packs for less than $1! So check down those aisles.

Frugal Living Friday: Gardening

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

I love to garden! But I don't make it any more difficult than it needs to be. I have found a very easy, weed-free, and fun way to garden: Square Foot Gardening! This will be my third year planting a Square Foot Garden and I love it. I will never garden any other way again! Square Foot Gardening (SFG) is ideal for people like me who have a small yard or no yard but still want to grow fresh vegetables, flowers, and other produce. Here was my garden in August of 2008.

The basic jist of SFG is that you can plant more in less space. And, you garden in boxes using a special soil mix. It equates to no weeds (weed seeds are in regular soil and you don't use regular dirt!), no rototilling, no sweat! Just plant and enjoy. See those tall plants by my sunflowers growing over the fence? Those are my tomato plants! (I grew those from seed myself, which I explain below.)

I highly recommend the book, All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. Check it out from your library first before you buy it. I am glad I purchased it however, because if you are going to garden this way, you need it as a reference. I am always looking up information in there. Because of time and space, I won't go into more detail here about SFG, but if you have specific questions, I would be glad to answer them for you.

The other part of gardening that I discovered last year was growing my own seedlings. If you have ever gone to a nursery you know how expensive gardening can be! Tomato plants, flowers, herbs....they are usually around $5 a pop. It can add up if you buy all of your plants. Last year I wanted to save some money gardening. So I planted all my tomatoes, peppers, basil, eggplant, and marigolds from seed.

In the SFG book there is a chart in the back that tells you when to plant seeds indoors before transplanting them outside after the last spring frost. I took this photo of my seedlings in May of last year, and they had been growing for about 5 weeks or so before that. As you can see from my full grown garden above, these seedlings took off once I put them in my garden....and my harvest was bountiful! All from seeds I planted myself. I saved around $50 doing this. I already had most of the seeds from the year before, so I didn't have to buy many seeds. I am starting my own seeds this year too. I am trying some new seeds this year: cauliflower and melons.

WHY GARDEN???? Because it is cheaper than produce at the grocery store, because YOU grew it so you know what's in it, and it's fulfilling being self-reliant! Remember the tainted spinach last year? Since I grew my own spinach it was nice I didn't have to worry about that for my issue for my family. If you have never gardened before, start small...grow a few plants to see what it's like. I have expanded my garden every year after I know what we like and don't like, and what grows well in my area.

Call your local county Extension Office. They will give you gardening information specific to your location and tell you when the date of the last spring frost is in your area.

Here are a few links to help you out on your gardening adventure!

What makes this deal better is using a coupon on the snack size raisins. These snack size packs are cheapest at Walmart. Watch for the Sunmaid coupons in the Sunday paper. I haven't seen one in awhile, so possibly soon.

Frugal Living Friday: Valentine's Day on a Budget

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

There are so many fun things to do for Valentine's Day that don't cost much money. Here are a few simple and fun ideas:
  • make heart shaped pancakes in the morning
  • make brownies and use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut them out
  • make a heart shaped pizza for dinner (or buy one at Papa Murphy's for $7)
  • use a coupon booklet that you made as a gift for family members
Here is one idea that I did last year. I got the idea from Family Fun magazine. You take old, broken crayons and put them in a mini tin, melt, and make crayons. I have a silicone heart one, which is perfect for Valentine's Day. You could use a regular mini muffin tin too.

When they are done you have colorful valentine crayons! HERE are the complete instructions from Family Fun. They show you how to make them into valentines you can give away that say "You Color My World." Super cute.
This year for my kids I am making giant Hershey Kisses...but instead of chocolate they will be giant rice krispie treats! My mom used to do it when I was growing up. Use a funnel as the mold, then wrap in tin foil and use some ribbon...and whalla! What kid wouldn't like that? Really friendly on the budget too. Use chocolate rice krispies for something different.

Here are some more fun, creative, and cheap ideas for Valentine's Day! Please share your fun traditions or ideas that you have.

Walgreens Deals

There are some great deals at Walgreens this week! Some of the free after rebate deals last all month. My Walgreens was already out of the Revlon Age Defying foundation and concealer that is free after rebate. I will go back for that later in the month. The Hershey candy deal is this week only.

For everything pictured here, I paid $27.96 out of pocket. I will be getting back $25.47 in rebates at the end of the month....so when all is said and done I will have paid $2.49 for everything pictured here! Awesome! This is a good time to stock up on some cold/flu medicine. It's an important part of your food storage. My expiration date is a year and a half away.

Here are the deals I got this morning:

#12 Triaminic or Theraflu 2/$10 - $6 rebate = 2/$4
COUPON OPTIONS:
Theraflu Product, any $1.50/1 (3-31-09) SS-1/4
Theraflu Product, any $1.50/1 (3-31-09) SS-12/7
Theraflu $1/1 printable at http://www.smartsource.com/
Theraflu $2/1 printable

I used two $2/1 printable coupons on both of my bottles, so they will be free after rebate! Just make sure your Walgreens takes printable coupons. Mine does. I chose the Theraflu on this deal, but there are also Triaminic coupons out there if you want Triaminic. If you want to see the Triaminic deal instead, look HERE.

#35 Hershey's bag candy 8-9.6oz - buy $10, get $5 rebate
Hershey's Valentine Chocolate bags $1.89 (7-day coupon) shows Kisses and Reese's
Buy 4 = $10 - 7-day coupon (.61 each) - $5 rebate = $2.56 for 4 bags (.64 each)
