Frugal Living Friday: Doing things yourself

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

What services do you pay for that you could do at home? This takes some thought, but there is generally some things that you can change.....things you can do yourself and keep more cash in your pocket. Many times you may have to learn a new skill in order to complete the task at home. But that is all about being self-reliant, right? Maybe things like:

  • haircuts for the kids (my boys for sure)

  • detailing the car

  • changing the oil in the car

  • pedicures/manicures

  • lawn maintenance

  • basic home repairs

Sometimes you have to weigh the amount of money against the amount of time it will take you to fix/complete the task. And sometimes it isn't worth it, depending what is going on in your life. I just think this is a good concept to think about, and maybe try one new area to save money where you weren't before.

Another way to get a service or "perk" is by trading with someone else, or working a bit in exchange for what you want.

For example, I wanted a gym membership last year but am too cheap to pay the monthly fee, setup fee, etc. So I did some checking and I got hired to work in the daycare at the gym once a week, for a three hour shift. Because I do that, I get my gym membership free! I can handle that commitment, plus I can take my younger kids with me for free when I work. It's only 3 hours and it saves me $360 a year!

I used to teach piano lessons, but no longer do so (officially anyway). But I do trade with a friend..she teaches my son and I teach her son. It was getting hard to teach our own children, so it works out great for both of us!

Do you do any type of trading services? What advice/tips/info can you share about doing your own services or exchanging? What do you do on your own to save money?

Frugal Living Friday: Making it Homemade

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Even though making food or other items from scratch takes more time, it is much cheaper to do and also very gratifying!

I'm not just talking about food or meals, either. What about things like playdough, baby wipes, and cleaners? If you really think about it, much more than you think can be homemade. These are just a few examples I thought of off the top of my head.

Playdough is so easy to make. There are lots of recipes floating around online, but here is the recipe I use.

Homemade Playdough
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1 Tbl. Alum powder
1 Tbl. baby oil
food coloring

Bring the water to a boil in a medium pan. Stir in everything but the flour. Stir in the flour. Add a little more flour if necessary. Knead. Cool and store in air-tight containers.

I also want to try this recipe sometime. Koolaid Playdough! That sounds fun.

When my oldest was born I made homemade baby wipes for years. I admit I haven't done that on my last two children, but it did save me quite a bit of money when I did do it. It has been too long since I made them for me to remember exactly how I did it, but it was similar to the link I posted. I do remember I used only Bounty brand paper towels, and I liked the select-a-size option so I could choose how big the wipes needed to be.

I talked last week about vinegar and how it is the only cleaner you ever really need! Do you have any cleaning concoctions that you like to use at home?

Cooking from scratch has been proven to be healthier as well as more cost-efficient. One of my favorite websites for cooking from scratch resources is Hillbilly Housewife. She has so many great tips and tricks.

Share any ideas or tips that you have on making things homemade. What do you do to stretch your budget?

Frugal Living Friday: Vinegar

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Do you know about the amazing powers of vinegar? You really don't need to be spending all that money on various cleaning supplies at Walmart....vinegar will clean almost anything! It is extremely cheap, good on the environment and safe around children and pets. Vinegar has been around for thousands of years, and is really one of the best things you can always have on hand. There are over 1000 uses for vinegar that I could find, probably more! Check out the tips on the websites listed here.

Vinegar Tips
Cleaning with Vinegar
Vinegar: The only cleaner you will ever need
The Vinegar Institute

Here are some of my favorite uses for vinegar:

  • cleaning out my washing machine. Ever notice how there sometimes gets to be a film on the inside of the machine? Or it might just smell a little? Well, fill the washer with hot water, pour in about 3/4 c. vinegar and let agitate for several minutes. Then let sit overnight. In the morning, let agitate again for several minutes, then rinse well.
  • cleaning windows. I pour water into an empty spray bottle, add a few Tbl of vinegar and mix well. It does a great job cleaning my windows.

  • cleaning the shower. Stop spending money on those 'clean shower' sprays! Use a mixture of vinegar and water after you shower and it keeps the mildew away. Also, spraying full strength vinegar on your shower doors and letting it sit before spraying it off will help get off water deposits.

  • making my own buttermilk. I never buy buttermilk...I always make my own! Mix in 1 Tbl vinegar to 1 cup milk, and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. Whalla...Buttermilk! I always use this in recipes and no one can tell the difference.

  • cleaning the microwave. To make cleaning your microwave easy, get a bowl of water, mix in a few Tbl of vinegar and put in the microwave for about 1 minute on high. The hot water will steam up the caked-on food, and wipe up will be a breeze...not to mention having a fresher smelling microwave!
What do you use vinegar for?

Frugal Living Friday: Freecycle

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Have you heard of Freecycle? If not, you need to check it out. In a nutshell, Freecycle is an online community where you can give away and get items for free (in your own town) that are otherwise thrown away or given to charity. The basic idea is to keep all this stuff out of the landfill if it can still be used....if not by you, then by someone else. There are thousands of groups all across the country. It is amazing how well it works!

When I first heard of Freecycle, I thought it was an interesting concept, but I was willing to try it. I joined my local group and began checking it out. I was amazed at all the things that were being given away! Everything from empty baby food jars to books to Eddie Bauer double strollers. Many people are genuinely interested in keeping as much as they can usable, and helping out other people.

In the past 3 years I have been a part of my Freecycle community, I have gotten many things from generous people: new diapers for my baby, clothes in great condition for my kids, shoes for my kids, toys, books, art supplies, a toy kitchen for my daughter, crafting supplies, sod, 10 jars of unopened peanut butter...the list goes on. It really is amazing what some people want to get rid of. All of my experiences on Freecycle have been good. There have been times I asked for an item that was listed, I got it, but then changed my mind once I received the item. I simply then re-listed it for someone else to use.

I have also given away countless items on Freecycle. I really enjoy doing that when the receivers are genuinely thankful for the item. When I receive an item off Freecycle I hope I convey how thankful I am as well. In this tight economy right now, any little bit helps! In the past I have posted some wants on Freecycle and have had people email me back, telling me they have the item I want and that I can have it. Last year my cell phone pooped out...so I posted a want for a working Verizon cell phone. I was not really expecting a response...but a sweet lady gave me a very nice working cell phone and charger! I was thrilled, and that saved me some cash!

Make sure when you join your local group that you know all the rules before posting. You have to post your offer and want in certain ways, and you are only allowed one want post per month (at least in my local group). Be courteous of others in your group and follow the rules. It is not the easiest thing to just get lots of items...usually you need to be the first to respond to an offer post. Then when the poster emails you back that you can have the item, you know it is yours. You then correspond back and forth about where to pick up the item.

I actually set up a specific email for Freecycle posts. That way I don't have to weed through everything when I want to see what has been posted. Every time I get into that email address, I can see what new items have been posted on Freecycle immediately. Makes finding things much easier.

Freecycle is an ingenious thing...don't miss out on it!

My first time ever doubling coupons

I was able to participate in double couponing for the first time ever! Yay for KMart Super Double Coupon Days! It was kind of exciting! Right now I don't have any coupon multiples so most of everything I got was single stuff. But I was really happy with all my deals. It was so awesome that the register froze when I was checking out and it took 45 minutes to get through it all...my kids were so good (and considering my daughter was starting to feel sick I was very happy.) Even with all that I'm glad I went. I paid $60 for $168 worth of stuff, and $14 of that is diapers, plus a 2-pk of princess toothbrushes on clearance for .87 cents. So I really paid $46 for all the deals. YAY!

Here is some of the stuff I got for free:

  • taco shells
  • several bottles of the shampoo
  • the Resolve
  • the Endust
  • Visine
  • Clearasil
  • Juicy Juice
  • some of the body wash

Most of the other stuff I paid between .25-.75 cents for, except for the toilet paper ($3), Tide ($3), Renu Contact Solution ($4) Airborne ($3.50) and a few others. I think I got great deals on everything and am really happy with my stock-ups!

Walgreens Trip

How much would you estimate I paid for everything pictured here? In case you can't see everything here is a detailed list:

  • 2 packages Huggies size 1 diapers, 56 count
  • Huggies wipes, 232 count
  • 5 Soft soap body washes
  • 3 boxes Children's Tylenol
  • 2 Dawn dish soaps, 13.5 oz
  • Loreal Skin Genesis skin cleanser gel

Would you believe I only paid $25.38? I was missing a few coupons so my total purchase could have been another $5 less if I had those. Regardless though, it was still a great deal!

Walgreens has something they call Register Rewards. If you purchase a certain amount of items that they detail for you, then after your purchase you get back a coupon for money off your next purchase. From my purchase today, I received $20 back in Register Rewards! (My $25 total above is figured after I subtracted the Register Rewards & subtracting the rebate I will be receiving. My out-of- pocket today was $56.66.)

So after factoring in my Register Rewards, I paid $17.22 for all the Huggies items, $1.24 for both bottles of Dawn, $2.45 for all the SoftSoap, $4.47 for all the Tylenol, and $6.99 for the Loreal. The Loreal is on it's own rebate deal, so I will get that full $6.99 back next month. Cool eh?

If you haven't gone to Walgreens to utilize their rebate program, Register Rewards, or great sales, you are missing out! There are many places online that teach you how to shop at Walgreens, so I won't spend my precious time typing it all out again when I can just send you there. Sounds practical, right?

Here is a past post of mine detailing info about rebates.

Walgreens can be kind of confusing because they have several different kinds of coupons, sales, and deals all combined together. PYP has a great explanation about all that for you. Don't forget to combine Walgreen's store coupons with manufacturer coupons for the best deal!

Money Saving Mom has many Walgreens deals posted each week. (If I would have been smart enough to click on her today before I went shopping I would have saved another $5 with the coupon she posted on her site...UGH! I hate it when I miss a coupon. Oh well, I still got great deals.)

I'm sure there are many other places online that are great Walgreen's resources, so if you know of any, please share!

Oh, and you can now submit your Walgreens rebates ONLINE! YAY! No more paper forms and mailing out! I am so excited about that!

Frugal Living Friday: Discipline!

Welcome to Frugal Living Friday! Each week I will feature a tip that can help us stretch our budget and live more frugally! If you have a tip that you want shared on Frugal Living Friday, let me know and you could become a guest blogger for a day.

Today's topic is quick. I have a sick 2 year old who is throwing up and I have a ton of laundry to do, so not a lot of time to write today! Here is my tip:

Try to go for one week without spending money on those "extras." Ask yourself if you really need that pop, those snacks at Target while shopping, or splurging on extras at the store. Those extra $$$ spent add up over time. See how much money you can save this week!

KMart Super Double Coupon Days

UPDATE: The Boise store said they were not participating...the lady was kind of rude about it. But the Nampa store said they ARE participating! Yippee!

KMart is offering Super Double coupons from October 1-5! All coupons except printables up to $2 are being doubled!! WOW!

I just heard about this tonight, and got my information from Money Saving Mom. She spells out all the rules and info, along with the link to participating stores and even shopping deals to be found.

So, I recommend you first read her post to find out all the details. If you don't see your store listed as participating, do what she suggested and call your store anyway and ask, because apparently all stores are supposed to be participating!

I am calling the 2 KMart stores by me in the morning to find out if my stores are participating. Stay tuned if you are a local for more info on that.
