Walgreens
2 Pantene texturize bottles (shampoo and conditioner)
1 Aquafresh toothbrush
1 box Contact solution
1 Rimmel foundation
Total at the resister (after coupons): $25.76
Rebate amount I will be getting back: $24.96
Total of .80 for all that! Amazing, huh!
Click on the link on the right, Walgreens FAQ if you have never done their rebates before.
Rite Aid also has a fabulous monthly rebate program. They are a little different, as you can do their program electronically versus Walgreens that is through the mail. Anyhoo, I will do another post about Rite Aid another time. No need to cause confusion!
I have been able to really stock up my food storage with hygiene items this way. I have around 200 toothbrushes, at least a year or more of toothpaste stocked and TONS of deodarant. Even baby supplies, shampoo & conditioner, shavers.....need I go on? It is nice being able to donate to the food bank, and the LDS hygiene kits without breaking the bank. It is great getting this stuff for free! A few months ago at Rite Aid I got Venus Breeze razor for free after I used a coupon, and I still got a $4 rebate back from them 3 weeks later. So I ended up $4 ahead. AWESOME!
These rebate deals go through September at Walgreens. If you would like to know the current coupons that go with these items to make the deal sweeter (like I got) let me know and I can post it.

Extra Money & Trades
Extra Money: Starting in the fall of 2001, I began teaching piano lessons. I had always wanted to try it, plus we really needed some extra income at the time. My oldest child was only 1 year old at the time, so it wasn't too difficult for me to get going. It worked for us until I stopped teaching in 2005.
I have also done lots of selling online. Ebay, Half.com, and on my freebie sites that I am a member of. I do more selling on the freebie sites since there are no fees to pay like on Ebay and such. I was really into online selling when my oldest was little, but I haven't done it as much lately. I just don't have the time anymore. But I have to admit I was getting pretty good at scouting out things at thrift stores and garage sales that would sell for more money. One that I recall was a pair of barely worn Eddie Bauer jeans I got at a garage sale for .50 cents. I sold them on Ebay for almost $20.
I do online surveys and market research and product studys that bring in a little extra. Even the $5 here and there adds up!
My hubby has a talent for finding cars that he can buy and sell for more money. For those who know him, you know he has a fetish for cars. Since he has been off his mission (12 years) he has had 18 cars. Fifteen of those have been since we have been married (9 years). I know.....crazy! Anyway, he has a eye for that stuff. There have been several cars that we sold for much more than what we purchased it for. It has helped us be where we are today in our nice vehicle situation. We both hate having car payments if we don't have to.
I have always wanted to learn better photography skills and make a little money on the side doing that. That is on my list of goals to accomplish someday.
We have also tried some network marketing things in the past, but they did not work for us. Glad that is over!
Trading: Some wouldn't really classify this as a trading service-for- service, but I think it might count. I just recently got a job at the a local gym in the day care. We aren't really needing the extra income, I only wanted the job so I could get a free membership. :) There is a lady in my ward who works there, she put in a good word for me, and I got the job. I only have to work one shift a week (which is 3 hours) and I get a free gym membership. Plus, I get to take my younger 2 kids with me while I work. What is more perfect than that? Three hours a week...that's it! I was thinking about joining a gym anyway, but this is better. A little spending money + free membership! I love it!
I have always wanted to trade either piano teaching or scrapbooking services with someone who can give me massages. :) :) :) Any local takers?
What ideas can you give us all? Post your experiences, good or bad, and let us know! It just may spark some ideas for us all to start. (By the way, I changed my settings so anyone can comment now, not just registered users). It will be fun to see what you have to say.

FREE or discounted things to do around town
Think you can’t have good fun with your kids if you don’t spend money? WRONG! Here is a list of things locally in the Treasure Valley to do that are free or half-cost.
Just a note: you may want to confirm these before you go to make sure, although I am nearly positive they are all still current.
NOTE: If you do not live in southwestern Idaho, maybe this list will give you ideas of where you can look for free and discounted activities in your area.
**Thursdays at the Zoo Boise are discounted admission through mid-October.
**My local library has tons of story time & craft & dance activities for free. You can pick up a calendar at the front desk. Some examples are puppet shows, father/son activities, movie nights (several times a month), community shows, etc. There is always a lot to do and see for free! A must do is the summer reading programs. Not only is it good to encourage your kids to read, but they earn great prizes. Passes to the YMCA, Discovery Center, free food coupons, etc. Don’t turn down opportunities to earn free coupons! I’m sure the other library’s in the Treasure Valley and where you live do the same things…call and ask!
**Free summer kids movies at Regal Theatres. It goes from the end of June through the third week in August, every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10am. See if your city is on the list here.
**Tuesdays are half-price happy meal night at McDonalds, from 5-7pm. Not all McDonald's participate so call your store to see if they do.
**Free summer movies in the park at Settler's Park in Meridian. Here is the 2009 summer schedule!
**Get free lunch all summer! In every town across the country, there are usually free lunches at parks or school for kids 18 and under. Here is a link for info at lunches in the park and schools in our area. Anyone can come, there is no criteria for getting the free food. Google your local area for free school lunches or call the Chamber of Commerce to ask for times and locations in your area.
**There are lots of parks with splash pads around. Forget paying to swim (unless you really want to). Merrill Park in Eagle, Settlers Park in Meridian, and a new one in Boise off Hill Road. All three parks have great splash pads, and offer lots of summer enjoyment with picnicking and toys for the kids to play on.
**Arctic Circle gives out mini ice cream cones (they are called “courtesy cones”) for free on an ongoing basis. You just have to ask. We like to go there for family treats…FREE! Also, I believe that A&W has .25 cones for kids if you are close to one of those restaurants.
**Monday nights at Cafe Ole is Kid's Night. After 4pm until closing, for every 1 regular dinner entree purchased, you get 2 free kids meals! Also a pinata bust.
**Hastings book store does a story time every week, but I think each store is different so call your store near you to find out the times. They have fun themes like fantasy, fairy tales, pets, etc.
**Barnes and Noble has a great kids section that has plenty of room to read, tables to sit, and even an entire Thomas the Train set up for kids to play with. It is a great place to go on a rainy day, get the kids out of the house to play and not spend any money! Toys R Us also has a Thomas the Train set up for kids to play with...but in my experience I try to keep my kids out of that store as it only causes tears and whining...know what I mean?
**Kid to Kid consignment stores has a kids book club. Your child gets a card, and each time you go into the store your child can pick out a book .99 or less for free! You can do this once a month, and you don't even have to purchase anything when you go in. Great, eh? Build up your library for free! (this was valid last year, I haven't currently checked in 2009)
**Michaels Arts and Crafts stores offer craft Saturdays that are minimal cost. HERE is info on that, or call your local store for details. Many times they are free!
**Archiver's Scrapbook and Memory Store in Boise lets you use the workroom for free during the week, M-Th, 6-9pm. Go have a scrap night with some friends without paying a fee!
**Home Depot on the first Saturdays of the month for the free kids project. They give them a little orange apron and make a craft. They start at 9am. Lowes also does kids project workshops every other Saturday, they begin at 10am. They build fun projects like birdhouses, herb gardens, football racks. Check the links for schedules or call your local store.
**Last year we went to the Discovery Center for free a couple of times. I just called to ask if there were discounted days and there were a few days out of the year that were free for anyone. So call and ask. Just know that those times are usually really crowded.
**Take the kids downtown to Boise to the Morrison-Knudsen Nature Park not far from the Discovery Center. Address is 600 South Walnut Street, Boise, ID (208) 334-2225. This learning center is a must for both tourists and residents, especially if you are a science buff. You will leave the center with a new appreciation for science and river habitats. Admission is free.
**Go up to the Boise Depot! It is a beautiful historic Spanish-style structure operated by the Boise Parks & Recreation Department. It has beautiful Platt Gardens, a lovely park with pathways, a gazebo and a koi pond. Call 384-4228 for more info on times when they are open. Admission is free.
**Kathryn Albertson Park and Ann Morrison Park. Both downtown Boise and LOTS of fun! Go on a nature walk, feed the ducks, and see lots of wildlife (mostly at Kathryn Albertson Park). Also try Julia Davis Park with the gorgeous rose gardens. That is the park right by the zoo. Kids love it! There are so many parks around here, try a different one each month. One of our old favorites is Camels Back park in North Boise. We used to live right by there and it was beautiful.
**Whaooz kiddie area is $2.50 admission, no time limit. Great for a rainy day. They also give out 18 free tokens for the kids to use after each school semester if they get good grades. Just take in your report card and show them! It's that easy.
**The first Thursday of every month, the Boise Art Museum has free admission, and until May 24th (?) the exhibit is Ansel Adams.
**Roaring Springs has discounted days, believe it or not!
I know I didn't get everything on the list, so I can add to it if you let me know something to add. I hope this list inspires you to check around your community for free or cheap things to do. Bottom line is that most places offer discounts or freebies that you just don't know about unless you ask! If the demand is there for discounts from the public, the places will offer them.

Some General Coupon Rules
You can use manufacturer coupons in conjunction with store coupons. You can never combine manufacturer's coupons on the same item, though. What is the difference? Store coupons will say 'store coupon' on it, where manufacturer coupons say 'manufacturer coupon' at the top. Those coupons are reimbursed to the store by the manufacturer, where store coupons are given out by the store as a promotion, and they do not get reimbursed. Albertson's, Walgreens and Fred Meyer are a few local stores that have their own store coupons on a regular basis. Here is an example scenario: Smuckers jelly is on sale at Albertson's for $1.99. I have a store coupon for .75 off one bottle, and I also have a manufacturer's coupon for .99 off one bottle. I CAN use both coupons for the same bottle! So my final payment for the bottle of jelly after coupons is only .25! FYI: It is also important to check out your stores to see if they take competitor's coupons. Albertson's WILL take Walgreens store coupons. So use them...you will end up saving more money than you think.
Rule #2
Never, Never, Never, Never photocopy coupons! This includes internet printable coupons (IP's) especially. I know many people who think it is okay to copy them, but it is committing fraud, and you can get in legal trouble. Besides, it makes couponing much harder for the rest of us honest people, because then stores are wary of accepting any printables at all. So do it the right way....print off what you can and call it good!
Rule #3
Regardless of what some cashiers say, it is legal to get things for free by using a coupon. Ignorance is really to blame here. Most people have no idea how coupons work and the good they can do. When some cashiers see that I am buying an item for $1.99 and I have a coupon for that item for $2 off, they think I am committing a crime. It is perfectly legal. What differs from store to store is getting overage for that purchase. Some stores will actually give you the penny back, and other's won't. That is up to them to decide. What is important to remember that as long as you are using the correct coupon for the correct item, you are doing no wrong. Most times they are just jealous!
Rule #4
Watch the expiration dates! Some stores will accept coupons after the expiration, but those are few and far between. Plus, it is embarrassing to try to use an expired one. Save yourself time and stress by planning ahead. Always know before you go into the store what you are purchasing and approximately how much you are going to spend. Nothing is more frustrating than having a cashier miss a coupon or not getting the amount deducted which you should get.
Rule #5
Organization! The most important thing about using coupons on a regular basis is organizing them! The most popular are the binder method and accordion folder method, but be creative and organize your coupons in the way suits you best. Organize by expiration dates, and when the coupons have expired, throw them away or you can send them to military bases. They can use them at the commissary for up to six months after expiration dates. Here is some info on that.
Rule #6
Don't be embarrassed to use coupons. Who cares what other people think. You are saving money. I have been in the checkout line before and have amazed shoppers in line behind me ask me where I get all my coupons and how I shopped like that. It really isn't difficult. If you want to, you can do it.
Rule #7
Always keep every coupon you get, even if you don't think you will use it. This might seem extreme, but it is a must do! I can't even tell you how many times I have come across an unexpected sale at the store and I have a coupon with me for a product on sale or on clearance that I didn't plan on buying, but since I had a coupon for it I got it for free or less than .25! This is especially true with hygiene items at Target. They ALWAYS have that stuff on clearance and if you keep all your hygiene item coupons you can come away with some great stuff for free or really cheap. For example, I have gotten Dr. Scholls lavender foot massage creme for .88 (regularly $4.50) and Jergens facial moisturizer with a slight self-tanner tint for .50 (regularly $6 something). Both items were on clearance, plus I have high value coupons I used on them to save even more.
Check out the link to Coupon 101 on the right side of the blog. It will also answer many other questions you may have.
Happy couponing!

Online Shopping
SHOPPING CODES
Not a lot of people know it, but there are almost always shopping codes out there for free shipping, a percent off, etc. Very rarely do I shop online without using a code (Amazon is one of those stores that rarely has codes, however). One of the best websites I have used for many years is Naughty Codes. You can look up a store individually, and see if there are any codes out there. Some other good websites for finding codes are EDeal, Deal Catcher, Current Codes, Coupon Heaven and Flamingo World. If you don't find what you are looking for on these websites, then google it. For example, if you are looking for coupon codes for JCPenney.com, you can google 'JCPenney coupon codes' to see what you come up with. Bottom line is: always look before you buy! Almost every time you will end up saving some money.
KICKBACKS
Whether or not you find a shopping code for your online order, there are websites set up that give you a percentage back if you shop through them. For example, Ebates is a personal favorite of mine. If you join, you get a certain percentage back into your ebates account whenever you shop through their links. They pay you the balance every 3 months as long as it is over $5. For example, if you want to purchase from Land's End, you would get 3% back from your order total (excluding shipping charges). If you wanted to purchase from Barnes and Noble, you would get 4% back. Get the idea? It really adds up. In the 5 years I have been a member with them I have gotten $45. I know that is not a ton, but I don't do a whole lot of online shopping either. Something is better than nothing, in my opinion.
Another website similar to Ebates is Upromise. This is set up differently, though. I am also a member here, and have been since 2002. They also offer kickbacks, but instead of getting the money back on a regular basis like Ebates, it is saved into a fund for your child's future education. Additionally, it is not only online shopping that can get you these kickbacks, but also shopping around town. You can register your debit and credit cards so when you shop and purchase specific qualified items, the kickback is automatically recorded for you. Albertson's is one store that this works with, as well as McDonalds, Exxon, BedBathandBeyond, and hundreds of others.
Other websites that give you points, rebates or credits are My Points and Fat Wallet. These websites also have current shopping codes and deals. Most times each of these sites also have special deals offered that you might not find elsewhere, and that you can only get if you shop through their site. It all depends on what you are looking for. I know there are other websites that do this, but all these that I have mentioned are the ones I know are legit.
A good example of the awesome kickbacks you can get was what happened to me last November. When I got an email from Ebates saying that for a limited amount of days they were doubling all percentages back, I knew it would be a good time to get some gifts we were needing to get anyway. I was wanting a scrapbook magazine subscription for my birthday, and with the double percentage back, I paid $14.97 for my subscription, but I got 40% back..that is almost $6! So I only ended up paying $8.98 for a scrapbook magazine that is normally much more. Additionally I paid $20 for ink cartridges at 123 Inkjets, I got $7 back, plus when I ordered initially I got free shipping and a 20% discount. Ebates gives you the kickback before those other coupons, great huh?
STOCK UP
When I find great sales, free shipping options, and clearance sales online, I stock up for birthdays, holidays, and other gifts. I have gotten many nice gifts for my family, Mother's Day or Father's Day gifts, etc for a fraction of the regular price. Just to clarify though: Just because something is on sale doesn't mean I buy it. You have to consider what is right for you, or for the person you are purchasing for. Amazon has toy clearance sales every year, and usually you can find some good stuff. I know I did this year, and in the end I spent $50 shipped on all three of my kids combined! WOW!
OTHER IDEAS
Don't forget to check Ebay, UBid, and Craigslist for things you may want to purchase. Many times they might be cheaper on there.
Joining freebie sites like Pinching Your Pennies, Deal Catcher and Phoenix Freebies also gives you an edge as they post deals you might not normally find. Especially on websites like Amazon. I recently just finished Christmas shopping for the kids....mostly all online! I was able to buy some normally expensive, brand new toys for 65%-75% off. When I can get a brand new $15 doll for Lacy for $5 shipped, I would much rather do that than buying a used one at a garage sale. Get the idea?
This is really so fun, that you will get addicted....so beware! :) It is fun to find unique gifts, online codes, and coupons that not everyone knows about. Start your search....and have some fun!

Albertson's
Here is an example. Right now, Albertson's is having their annual Box Top sale, where hundreds of General Mills items are on sale for a really good price. Even without coupons, the prices aren't too bad. Combine with the coupons from the Sunday paper (and online printables) and the prices are even better! Here is what I bought last night (this is actually my second big trip for this sale so I didn't buy as much):
3 boxes Pop Secret popcorn
3 Betty Crocker cookie mixes
3 Betty Crocker muffin mixes
6 boxes Nature Valley and Curves granola bars
4 boxes GoGurt
9 boxes various General Mills cereal
2 bags Chex Mix
2 Kelloggs H2O protein water (both free after the coupons I had)
a bunch of bananas
________________________
TOTAL paid: $25.62...that is about .80 per item. Cool, eh? I had $23.33 worth of coupons, plus the way their promo is you get $5 off for every 10 items you buy, so I saved another $15 that way. This is a great sale for me and other who live areas where you don't have the luxury of double or triple coupons all the time.
Today is the last day of the sale! So if you have an Albertson's nearby where you live, gather your coupons together from the last Sunday, click on the printable coupon link I have listed on the right, and go!
My suggestions:
Look at Albertson's ad either from their store or online to see what items are on sale, and plan out your trip before you go. Especially if you are buying a lot of items, you want to understand how much you will be paying before you get to the register. Have your coupons counted (you don't want one to get missed) and watch them ring up everything! Remember: Albertson's policy is that if it rings up wrong, you get that item for free!

More fun ways to get free stuff and get paid too!
One way to have fun getting free stuff or making a little money is by mystery shopping. I have done mystery shopping on and off for the past six years with some great results! Our favorite was when I was a mystery shopper for Round Table Pizza…yum! We had free dinners at least twice a month for awhile. I have also done mystery shopping that involved Merry Maids cleaning service, and shopping (I got free socks out of the deal).
Here are the companies that I have done mystery shopping for. They are reputable and honest, and payment isn’t too slow. What I like best is that the money is deposited right into my Paypal account, except with DSGAI, they mail a check.
http://www.jancyn.com/
http://www.dsgai.com/
http://www.sassieshop.com/
If you go to these websites and sign up, there is no fee. I don’t believe in having to pay for mystery shopping. After you sign up, they will contact you for available shops in your area. They go quick, so if you get an email saying there is one available, you have to sign up fast. Sonic mystery shopping is a big one in my area.
Each company has it’s own rules and how things need to be done. Read their FAQ if you have questions. It takes time to get set up and going, but once you do a shop or two it goes much quicker, as you know what to look for and watch for the next time.
Mystery shopping is not for everyone. I actually haven’t done it for quite awhile, as I have too busy. It does take extra time. But it can be fun and a way to get free stuff in the process.
SURVEYS
Completing surveys is another great way to get some extra cash and do product tests. I have been doing surveys for PINECONE Research for 5 years now and they pay $5 per survey and $5 per product test. They are difficult to get signed up with, but if you can get in, it is a chance you should not pass it up! There is never a link on their website but usually on banners randomly on the web.
I can’t talk specifics as when you do surveys and product tests you agree not to talk about it, but so far in the past 3 weeks I have made $15 from Pinecone by doing 2 surveys and a product test. What is fun about the product tests is that you get $5 for testing it, and you get to keep/use/eat the product!
Here are some other survey sites that I like, and payment does come. I like Gang and Gang and Pinecone because they pay me via Paypal so payment comes quicker. These companies do pay!
http://www.resonanceresearch.net/ (Gang and Gang)
http://www.surveymonkey.com/
Vocal Point is surveys and a kind of ‘club’ that you join, they are always sending little coupons and samples to you in the mail, and there are surveys to complete as well. You don't get paid for this one, you just get stuff. Still not a bad deal! :)

BZZ Agent
Bzz Agent is a fun website that has an obvious purpose: advertising by word of mouth is the best way to advertise. You sign up for free and check back periodically to see if there are campaigns that are offered to you. Answer some quick surveys and polls to have more of a chance. I have gotten lots of products to test from them, I even got my Sonicare toothbrush last year from Bzzagent!!

Product Samples
Product samples things I think everyone should have. They are easy to get, free, and fun! Here are a few reasons they are useful and good to have on hand: Product Samples
1. They are PERFECT for 72 hour kits! (Plus, it keeps the cost down.)
2. Great for traveling.
3. It is always nice to have something on hand when you run out and can't get to the store
4. I love helping out others...remember Sherri, when you were moving last year and you had already packed your laundry detergent, you had laundry to do and you couldn't get to the store? Marne to the rescue with her detergent samples!! :)
It really isn't hard to get started, and you won't get lots of annoying junk email. Granted, you will get some because that what happens. So, first you need to be okay with that. Set up an email specifically for freebies, samples, and deals that you give out. That will keep them at bay. Here are some websites to get started. They are the perfect ones to get going on:
Walmart...these are constantly changing. Check several times a week, and you can always request more than one. They always come!
StartSampling ...I have been getting samples from these guys for 5 years. They are great! You can only request one sample every 24 hours though.
Another tip is every time you see a new commercial for a new product out, especially Dove, they always offer free samples. Go to the company's website and look for a link. But also keep checking pinching your pennies, because people always post links there for free samples also. There is a forum called Less Than a Penny where you can get free stuff!
Just remember, the key to all of this is organization. Have a designated space for your samples. I have mine in a tote, and divided into categories using Ziploc bags that I have labeled on the outside, ie, face care samples, hair care samples, etc. Being organized makes it all easier, simpler and you always know where everything is.
